Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Startup Icon Parameters

The following works fine and loads with my custom bitmap referenced in su.txt:

    Target: "P-333cProgram FilesA5v4Alpha5.exe" "y:dba5gei_db.adb" -include="y:dba5su.txt"

    Start in: Y:Dba5

The following loads the database but ignores the su.txt file:

    Target: P-333cdba5GEI_DB.adb -include="su.txt"

    Start in: P-333cdba5

I don't want to map the drive letters. What is the right syntax to run su.txt?

Thanks for your reply, but that doesn't work. If anyone knows the answer...

        Peter,

I haven't had the need to use "-include" files but my guess is that they must either be in the A5 executable directory (such as C:\Programs\A5v4) or the full path must be included.

Cal's reply jogged my memory. Include only worked for me when the target included the A5 executable rather than the adb file. I believe that in the absence of the executable, even stating the full path to the file to be included didn't work.

Instead of -include I usually put all the stuff I would have put in the included file in a batch file which I set as the shortcut's target.

            Bill,

I was also thinking of a batch file. Would you mind posting your batch file so as to enlighten me?

              RE: Startup Icon Parameters

              Peter,

              If the include file does not have a path as part of it, it uses the "Start In" path to find the include file. If Start In directory is blank, it is looked for in the folder of the executable in the Target. Examples are;

              Target is

              "C:Program Filesa5v4alpha5.exe" -include=start.cmd

              Start In folder is

              c:data

Thus start.cmd must be in c:data folder. Quotes around the include file are probably OK, but unnecessary unless you have spaces in your include file name or path (not normally a good thing to do)

                Peter,

Here's the batch file I use to start my address book. I point the shortcut to the batch file which is in the application folder. In shortcut properties I check run minimized and close on exit. "Start in" is the application folder.

That's all there is to it.

                  Thank you Ira & Bill,

I finally got it to work, either using the icon parameters or Bill's batch file. Actually, I prefer the batch file in the network environment as it simplifies maintenance and probably causes less user problems (i.e. end users monkeying around with startup parameters).

That was my motive as well.
