Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Conditional Auto Increment?

    I am trying to get all of our customer quotes to be auto incremented starting at a different point from our actual orders. I was wondering if something like this could be done. I want to get all of the quotes from the calculations and lookups from the invoice system. We than also want to be able to quickly retrieve these quotes to make them into real orders with just changing the "Quote #" to a "PO #"
    I was wondering if a code needed to be placed on the activation of a radio buttonor maybe a a checkbox to retrieve an auto incremented field value. I am trying to piece together a code along these lines: if radio button pushed, retrieve last incremented value from auto increment, add 1, if not checked, user entered value. I am not &v:sure on how to get a field to be both user entered and auto incremented. Is this all too crazy?

    RE: Conditional Auto Increment?

    Jeff,
    Maybe this will help. L have it attached to a button on the onpush event, it get a value form a table tant has only one field and record and add 1 to it and writes it to the field.
    As with most of what I use the idea came from users on this board Dr. Peter Wayne to name just one of many.
    Hope it helps
    Nick

    option strict
    dim tbl as p
    dim shared a_field_value as c
    dim lastnum as n
    dim reply as c
    dim rus as n
    dim counter as p

    dim global counteft as n
    dim ix as p
    dim tries as n

    tries =0
    rus=table.get("membership").mode_get()

    tbl=table.get("membership")
    lastnum=tbl.membership->eftnum
    on error goto no_open
    counter=table.open(:A5.get_path()+"counteft.dbf",file_rw_exclusive)
    on error goto 0
    ix=counter.index_primary_put()

    if tbl.payment_type="EFT" then

    if ix.records_get()=0 then
    counter.enter_begin()
    counter.counteft=1
    counter.enter_end(.t.)

    else
    counter.change_begin()
    counter.counteft=counter.counteft+1

      RE: Conditional Auto Increment?

      Jeff, I'd probably use two different fields, and let autoincrement do its thing on each separately. You could easily use completely different numbering schemes that way.

        Tom,

        It's good to hear from you again. That is the solution I was just working on. I have think I have this figured out so that everyone is happy. I still have not finidhed with the errors on the packed tables or the problem with the sub report printing multiple times. Oh well for now. But thanks for the help, it is going to be fine.

          Is there a quick way to get the auto increment function to begin from another point than "1"?

            RE: Conditional Auto Increment?

            Search the message board for details. This question comes up a lot.

            I think you have to turn off the autoincrement field rule.
            Then add a dummy record to the table, using a field value that you want to begin your incremented values from.
            Then turn on the autoincrement field rule.

            I believe the autoincremenet field rule uses the value in the last physical record in the table as it's starting point, when a new record is added after the field rule is reactivated.

              RE: Conditional Auto Increment?

              Has anyone heard of the auto increment missing a number? I have filled in the previous records with numbers, turned the auto increment on, and then entered two records. Two errors happened: 1) it did not start on 250 but again at 1 2) it skipped 2! What could possibly be the problem?
