Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How do I Format a Calc Field in a Browse?

I have a form with some calculated fields. I added an embeded browse to the form which contains some of the calculated fields. I need to format a calc field to show a total time but can't figure out where to format it. I've searched the field properties, but no luck. If it's obvious, my only excuse is a bad cold.

    Thanks for the direction,

    Ken,

Click on the column header of the browse while in design mode. Then either select object properties or right click on the header and select properties. The right click needs in small columns to be to the left side of the header, otherwise you select the browse properties.

Some of the time functions have formatting as optional parts of the function.
      totime(n seconds,n format_code,n decimal_places)
      time([c format[,t time])

RE: How do I Format a Calc Field in a Browse?

        Ira,

That's what I thought I was doing but I tried it again. I dbl clicked on the browse to get to the edit mode and then clicked on the column heading to highlight the column, then right clicked to get to the column properties. The browse doesn't carry over the entire expression so I need to find a way to edit the expression to add /3600 so it converts the seconds. When I go to the format tab, the only options are the different dollars & cents formats.

I have not been able to find an object properties.

I don't know what you mean by "The right click needs in small columns to be to the left side of the header". I've right clicked all over the place, same results.

        Thanks,

        ken

what Ira is referring to is the tendency on skinny columns to make access to the columns properties via the right click darn tough. You need to hold the mouse button below and to the left (in my experience) of the column header. I usually just widen the column, set the properties, reset the column width.

If all you need is to change the formula, click the "Calculated fields" button on the toolbar and fix it there...

It's been light showers but basically a lovely day in Berkeley. I even got a drive in the country. But then I had to figure out how to unload a 4,200 lb specimen tree without forklifts. Tomorrow we have to move it about 500 ft into a canyon and plant it. By hand. Any one got the phone number of an Egyptian Pharoah?

            Steve,

My columns are wide enough so no problem there. The calculated fields via the form, calculated fields are OK. For some reason, when a browse is created, it won't carry the entire expression and displays in seconds. I also tried creating a browse via the browse tab and had the same results.

Looked like you folks got some mositure. Bring the stuff to my place, no canyons here. (My place needs landscaping!!!!) Just a lot of trees and lakes. Sunny and warm today and through the weekend.

            Thanks,

RE: How do I Format a Calc Field in a Browse?

On my browse's, to be able to edit the field properties of a field in the browse, I first must left-click to select the whole column, including all records listed so they're all black background with white lettering, then right click, then choose properties. At that point I will be supplied the properties for that particular field instead of the properties for the browse.

If I click on the column and only the column title is blackened then when I right click I'll be shown the properties for the whole browse, and not the field itself.

                Mike,

Thanks for responding. This is VERY interesting as mine does not work that way. 1st, I dropped an embedded browse onto the form. I clicked on the browse to give it focus. Then dbl clicked on the browse to put it into the edit mode. If I right click, anywhere on the browse, the browse properties come up. (Not what I want) If I click on the column heading, the column goes black w/white letters. Right click and the field properties come up. However, there is no place to edit the expression for the field.

The only thing I haven't tried is deleting the field and then selecting the field from the drop/drag field list. Will try that when I get home later today.

                  Update,

I have the problem solved. The original expression was missing a pair of (), thus it wouldn't divide. When used in the browse, the expression cannot be edited. When used on the form, the expression can be edited.

                  All's well that ends well.

                  Thanks for all the suggestions,
