Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    No records found!!!

Why would a report show no records or 'pages' to report on if the 'Queries/show all' menu item is greyed out? Does'nt that mean that all records are available to report on?? I have a client with a run time version of a simple database and he is getting this problem.
I set up the run time on one of my PC's, using exact copies of the same wise-install disks that he used to install. He emailed me his dbf cdx and fpt files, I loaded them and it worked just fine!. So we both had the same stuff, my report printed ok (30 pages!!) and his said 'no pages found'.

Any ideas on why this should happen?

    Thanks in early anticipation

    RE: No records found!!!

Is there any user input before the report runs, i.e. an ask user variable or a field to fill in on a form that gets used filter the report?

We recently converted some numeric fields to character. Now instead of entering, say 2, for a department, the user must enter 02. Entering 2 will select no records as there is no match between 02 and 2.
    There can be only one.

      Hi Stan
Yes there is user input ( a reference number). The strange thing is, as you will see from my original question, that the report works OK on my PC, but not on my clients, even though it is exactly the same run time program and data. Thats what I don't understand!!!

        hi jeremy:

i had a similar problem except that i had a calculated field that would yeild an error. all worked fine on my computer but the darned thing would not run on my client's. after beating my brains out for several days i re-formatted his hard drive (fdisked it first), and re-loaded win98. this fixed the problem, but what a pain. as one contributor to this forum suggested, try to get a different hard drive as a test.

lots of luck sir, you may be dealing with another quality problem from mr. gate's wonderful world of wacky (mis)operating systems.

        regards,

Are you doing the user input on both machines?

My point was that you and he could be trying to do the same thing, but inputing different things. If I tell one of my users to try printing the report for department 2, and I mean for him to input 02, but he inputs 2, he will get "no pages".

Is there any way he could misunderstand how to input the "reference number"? Does it contain dashes, etc? Does it require leading zeroes?

            RE: No records found!!!

Thanks for all your suggestions. I found the answer after giving my client the 'third degree' about what he did. Apparently he ignored the 'restore data' button that I had so carefully created on the program, and instead used windows explorer to drag the data from the floppy onto what he thought was the correct directory on the C drive. It wasn't - he put the data into the program directory, not the data directory.

Two hours of my time and all your help wasted due to idiot clients!! We try to make programs 'user-friendly' but sometimes the users are not so user friendly!!!!

              To quote Mark Twain:

"What makes a man ignorent is not the stuff he don't know. It's the stuff he does know that ain't true."

I prefer users who know enough to ask.

One of my users did exactly what Jeremy's did, except not with input files but rather with export files.

Finian wrote something on this a while back. It ended, "Users, can't live with them, can't live without them."

              What's to add?

                Absolutely!!!

Glad to know that I don't have a monopoly of clients that do stupid things (and then moan to us that the program has bugs in it!!!!)

How about the Announcement board? Problems having nothing to do with Announcements clutter up the board and make viewing and finding important announcements time consuming, etc. There are 267 posts, most of which have nothing to do with Announcements. Isn't that why the separate catagories were created in the first place? So, who is .........?

To reply to Ken's message.. I don't see what you are getting at talking about announcements board and problems. This thread was about a problem and is in the right area. Can you clarify???

                          RE: No records found!!!

                          Jeremy,

Your post is where it's supposed to be, on the A5 message board. The Announcement board was created for just that, Announcements and resposnses to annoucements. Sometimes however, a message will be inadvertently posted on the announcement board. That a given.

However, most messages on that board have nothing to do with announcements. Perhaps the best way to cure the problem is to simply NOT REPLY TO THE MESSAGES. If the replies continue, the purpose for which the Announcement board was designed will no longer be viable. You go there because you think an announcement has been made only to find someone can't figure out why 2+2 doesn't =4. So, after awhile, it will become disfunctional (almost there) and who wants to check out another bogus announcement?

Ken, I still don't understand why you are telling me all this on this particular problem thread. My problem was where it was supposed to be (as you said), and I have'nt incorrectly put a problem in the announcements board. So what point are you making on this thread???

                              Jeremy,

Let me try one last time.

This often happens on some threads; comments are made which have nothing to do with the post but rather; 1) Provides some humor (We all need that to survive), 2)A subtle disagreement with a comment that was made and 3)Sometimes a thread is used to get a point across that has nothing to do with the original post, one thing just happens to lead to another, just like a conversation (which is what this is).

Now to specifically answer your question as to what point I'm trying to make. You stated,

"Two hours of my time and all your help wasted due to idiot clients!! We try to make programs 'user-friendly' but sometimes the users are not so user friendly!!!!"

I responded, "How about the Announcement board"? At this point, the posts are not directed to your problem but merely to point out that those who use the Announcement board to post problems are not understanding the basis for which the Announcement board was created. There is a similarity between these folks and your client. Clients and developers make obvious mistakes, myself included. (Some on this board will attest to that and they've been most gracious towards me). Sometimes we just simply MISS THE OBVIOUS. I was merely attempting to point out that developers and clients are often in the same boat; They make obvious mistakes.

Is is NOT my intent to offend you (or anyone else). If I've offended you, forgive me for responding. However, I believe that anyone who hires someone to develop a program is not an idiot. They're putting their faith and trust in the developer and despite an obvious mistake, a measure of grace is needed. I think that's the point that others were trying to make as well.

Hope this clears it up for you.
