Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 on Website

I believe this was discussed here before, but I don't remember the dialogue. I have been approached by a potential client about creating a database for his website. Would there have to be some type of front end program to and from which data would be exported back and forth? Or does this depend upon the software used to develop the website? I seem to remember getting some information from the company whose software I used for mine that it could now include a database for entry of data from the web. I haven't had a reason to set one up for myself or anyone else yet but will probably get more requests for this service in the future. Is website compatibility a feature of the new upgrade of Alpha?

Thanks for whatever input you are able to give me

Sylvia: I will be very interested in the responses to your question, as I am interested in doing the same - I think it will be a common request soon. I am a rank novice, but I have had some success using a program called ColdFusion to do this - so far I have only been able to display data from A5 tables on web pages, not update the tables - but those capabilities are there. ColdFusion is expensive - I have a 30 day demo which will vanish soon - and I believe there are other more economical programs available. If you take a look at ColdFusion, you can link to A5 if you set it up as an "odbc data source" using the MS FoxPro driver v2.6 that is supplied. I look forward to the other responses from more experienced people. -Bill

      Sylvia,

If you are talking about what I would call a "passive" web database, Alpha 5 V4 &
a basic knowledge of HTML is all you need. Let me describe it in a little more
detail. If your client wants to put a database of his product line or catalogue
on his web site I would call that a passive or static database....You generate
the web content from an Alpha 5 database & upload the web pages to the clients
      web site.

The structure of the web database can closely emulate the structure of the Alpha
database with one-to-one "links" & one-to-many "links". When new records are added
to the Alpha5 database then those web pages and any pages that would link to the
new data would have to be generated & uploaded to update the web site database. I believe that there are CGI scripts to search a web site for text strings, so it
should be possible to include a text search of the web database. The web pages can be a generated via xbasic scripts by fetching through a table/set & adding
HTML code to the .write_line(Text Line). Your client only needs to know how
to ftp to his site to update the web database.

Thanks for your response, Bill. I will check into this further. I agree that this will soon be a common request as everyone seems to be conducting business online.

Thanks, Doug. My knowledge of HTML is very poor. However, I do have a book on the subject and will see if I can figure out how to do this. I knew that book would come in handy someday.

If and when I solve this, I will pass it on to others.

            RE: A5 on Website

After I logged off last night I reread your post. Actually this website is a resume service and so people would be entering data into the forms instead of just reviewing information from his databases. I have asked him several times if he is planning to do anything else with the data but haven't received an answer yet. If not, he probably doesn't need one of my systems for the website. Any good website designer could create the forms and scripts for entering and displaying the information.

I read through my html book last night, and it appears to be pretty easy and straightforward to write the code for creating forms and retrieving the information from scripts or emails. The book I have is very well written and easy to follow. I recommend it to anyone who wants to experiment with website design. ("HTML for the World Wide Web" by Elizabeth Castro)

Once again, thanks for your input.
