Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Should you come to the A5 Developer's Conference?

Alot of people have indicated that they feel their skill levels in A5 may be not ready for attending a "Developer's" conference. Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but if you do more than entering or changing data and use an application developed by someone else, guess what that makes you.....

    A DEVELOPER!

With this in mind, I have added a "Should I Attend" menu choice to the conference web page. To visit the Web Site, click below.

RE: Should you come to the A5 Developer's Conferen

        Hopefully, within the week, I'll be able to list the topics of the talks that will be covered. Some of them will definitely cover;

        1. Form Design
        2. XBasic (beginner & Advanced)
        3. A5 without programming
        4. New features of A5V5
        5. What the future holds for A5
        6. Speed & efficiency
        7. Function design
        8. Using the debugger & trace window

The smaller group worksessions will concentrate on more focused A5 areas and will be open discussions led by group leaders for the most part. These will be determined based upon input from those attending (send those emails!), new areas of A5V5 that user's might need to know about, and what the group leaders feel they can discuss.

        See you this December!

            Hi Ira,

Where oh where has your web site gone? I was hoping
to print out an application for the conference to
            beat the deadline.

            Thanks

              Paul,

              It's where it's always been.

To visit the Web Site, click below.

Alpha Five Developer's Conference Web site

If your browser has trouble with the above, type the following into your browser

              http://www.ultranet.com/~csda/a5conf

Finally, if you want to make sure you have the most current version displayed in your browser, hit the reload button. This will force a reload of the browser's cache

We've set up credit card acceptance (but it may only work with US issued cards). For international payments send an International Money Order payable in US dollars (or send the payment via Western Union). The credit card service may start accepting non-US issued cards in October.

Be sure to submit your registration form online (and print a copy of it to send too). This saves me a whole lot of typing into an A5 database (what else?!) that reads the web form via an A5V4 generic script function (and soon should send back an automatic response).

Hope to see you there in December!

RE: Should you come to the A5 Developer's Conferen

I'm getting excited already! But I need to ask a couple of questions because my database is for a non-profit, so I am looking at a personal donation of the total amount of the conference, travel, etc.

What happens if A5V5 is not available in time for the conference?

Can we afford to upgrade to the new version? IOW anyone have a ball park guess on the price?

RE: Should you come to the A5 Developer's Conferen

                  Sandy,

Even if A5V5 is not available in time for the conference, a "Working" beta will probably be generally available. The speakers will be able to give you a good kickstart into using it, but many of the topics will apply to older versions as well.

Can you afford to upgrade to the new version? The question will be, can you afford not to. The new dialog controls, functions, email capability etc will save you tons of time plus solve many of the walls we are bumping into now with V4. However, don't be surprised if there are some things that do have bugs, as all programs inherently have.

My guess on the price is probably about the same as the last upgrade, but that's based upon previous upgrades all being about $100. I'm sure we'll hear about it from Selwyn Rabins when he's ready.

                      David,

I received your registration form (although no payment yet). The auto responder (part of which only works in A5V5)is not yet fully implemented. The convert submitted form to a record and the send an e-mail back scripts are working fine.

However, the get e-mail form part is not yet working. This is new area of testing of the A5V5 beta. Actually more like an alpha release which would make it an Alpha 5 Alpha as opposed to an Alpha 5 Beta. Obviously everyone is waiting for the Alpha 5 Omega which means it would be done. But that's a build for another day! :?)

                        Ira,

What I would love to have is the ability to step through a process, be it an action script, XBasic or whatever with prompts telling me what is going to happen BEFORE it happens, rather than having one of my brilliant programming solutions blowing up in my face. I'm not looking for a complete system diagnosis and forecast of what is going to happen, but a simple dialog box that this says 'The next operation will delete all records in table xx', or You are about to overwrite yadda, yadda'. I think you get the point. I don't know about anyone else, but as for myself, I have a short circuit between concept and implementation on a regular basis.

If this doesn't make sense, I discuss it with you in December.

Another thought. How about an expanded selection of hot keys? I understand that the system uses certain hot key combinations, but it would be nice to be able to select from the 21 CTRL-? options. If we can't use any of the reserved CTRL keys, could ALT key combination added for developers?

                            Dave,

To your 1st comment, I'd say the debugger is what you should be using. It won't tell you what the next step will do, but it will show you the contents of items you enter in a monitor list. You might just need a few pointers in how to use it.

To the point about Ctrl (or Alt) hot keys - This is an enhancement suggestion (that may have been addressed in A5V5 - I haven't really looked). You could trap some of these and process with ONKEY events, but it is difficult maintaining context for hotkeys.

In any event, suggestions to me are basically useless. Direct them to Selwyn. Perhaps we can have a wish list to submit to Selwyn for the next version at the conference with immediate feedback as to their viability and practicality as well as their general usefullness.

Of course we can afford not to upgrade; we can do nothing. No problems about rewriting old scripts and functions that don't work, no worry about the cost of the conference and upgrades on a $0 budget with $0 income, no worry about A5v5 running on our elderly hardware.

OTOH, maybe Controlpanel.hide()will finally work properly .
