Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Converting from Alpha4 to Alpha5

In Alpha4, I created invoices in the letters form. In the script application I prompted the user for a numeric (Jan=1, Feb=2, Mar=3, etc.)and by using the MOD function I was able to print an invoice for a customer every six months. For example, if the customer's month was February, I would be able to include that customer in the August billing cycle using the MOD function. It was:
BILL_DATE=MOD({A%}+6,12). My question is how can I do the same thing in Alpha5? I have not written any Xbasic as of yet and I thought perhaps this would be something done through Query by Table and save it as an Operation. Am I on the right track and if not, does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thank you !

The MOD function works in A5 the same as it does in A4, so you should be able to pursue the same model.

Yes, it does, but do I have to write it in an Xbasic script or can I use it in just a Query by Table?

RE: Converting from Alpha4 to Alpha5

Arthur, if you want you could use Query by Table to return a recordset which contains only the customers whose 'month' met your query criteria.

Then, while the query is still in effect, you could run your report or letter. Only those records in the current recordset would be included.

This assumes that when you design the report or letter you choose the option to 'base report on current selection of records'. This is a property of the details section of your report or letter. It also assumes that you base your report or letter on the same table upon which the query was run, and that you run the report before the query is released.

Remember to release the query by Show All, after your report runs.

There are other ways to do this, too. When you are ready you might try defining a variable in the layout of your report. You could write a short script to quiz the user for the variable value, and then use that variable in a filter embedded in the layout design itself. This would closely parallel what you were doing in Alpha Four, I believe.

          Adding to Tom's reply:

You could use the ask variables in the filter definition of the report. This is not the preferred way, but it's quick and easy if it works.

            Tom,

Thanks for your reply. At the present time, I'm new to Alpha 5 and have not tackled Xbasic yet. I will use your suggestion for Query by Table.

Another thing I did in the Alpha 4 letter was select certain paragraphs based on a "Y" or "N" in certain fields. Can I do that in the body of the letter or can that only be done through an Xbasic script?

            Thanks again!

RE: Converting from Alpha4 to Alpha5

Arthur, it's more productive for others if you don't start a second thread of questions and answers on different topic, inside an existing thread.

Having said that, I think you'll find that conditional objects placed iin your letter will work nicely. You can define them in such a way that particular objects appear only on certain circumstances... and you can place your text in the objects...

Sorry Tom - Alpha4 was a lot easier than Alpha5 - I think I best look for a commercial program that can do this invoicing job. Thanks again for the help!

                  Arthur,
Don't give up yet. Alpha 5 is much more powerful than Alpha 4, will do more things and requires a little effort to learn. You probably would have been better off if you'd never learned Alpha 4 since the conversion seems so diffucult. If you stick it out, you will be amply rewarded.
