Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    2 gig limit on dbf

It's really true -- I ran up against it today. A single dbf cannot be larger than 2 gigs. Just a friendly warning and reminder to anyone who's headed that way.

    Steve,

Do you think that's an Alpha limitation or a DOS/Windows problem.
    There can be only one.

It's an inherent limitation in the .dbf format.

        Steve,

Inquiring minds want to know. (Rookies) How do you get around it? Create another table and transfer data to it?

There were a couple of options in my case. What I was doing was importing the Michigan voter registration file. I did two things:

          a) I eliminated some of the fields that I decided I could do without; and

          b) I shortened some of the fields. For instance, the table ascii file had a length of 30 for the city. My experience is that a city length of 20 will get 99.98% of what you need, so I cut it down.

The result is 7.3 million records in 1.3 gigs.

The other thing I could have done is set up a one-to-one relationship between two .dbfs. I would have had to do this if the above approach didn't trim the size sufficiently. The drawback is that I would have needed to go through the import process twice -- once for the parent and again for the child, thus doubling the importing time.

          Make sense?

Yes it does. 7.3 million records; now that's a few more(humor)than most of us deal with. I doubt I'll approach that anytime soon.

            Thanks for the explanation.

steve - what kind of computer hardware and operating system are you using for that many records - it could take 2 days to update the indexes and/or manipulate the data once

Amazing. All on a PC? Even if it is on a supercomputer, I am still impressed.

How do indexes searches respond in that kind of environment. Is query optimization still apparent?

I'm just running an AMD 500 Mz with a decent motherboard. The data's on a 30 gig IBM Deskstar which runs at 7200 rpm. Normally I have my stuff on Ultra-SCSI but I don't have such room available right now on one of those disks.

I haven't done much processing yet and won't be doing all that much, either. It's basically some list selections and some sorting etc. for an election campaign.

Non-indexed stuff takes a while to query. LQO queries are impressive though.

hard drives have come down so much (remember 1881-2-3-4-5 when 5 to 8 megabytes cost 1500 to 3000) i use ibm's 10000-ultra160 - only about 250 each - 4.9ms access time

i'm not all that happy with my motherboard - recently upgraded to a socket370-933-PIII - am going to change it saturday - ugh - what a job - all the resetting up after it boots up

I still remember the amazment at having a hard drive -- then we had one that would hold 2 megs and couldn't imagine how we could ever fill it up. Most programs we wrote were saved to 360k floppies and the progs were about 1k big.

                          Steve,
Besides Alpha Five (4.03), I compiment it with Vista Software's Apollo DBF engine (www.vistasoftware.com). I use their DLL's to access Alpha data files.
Their literature states: One billion records per table. "And the actual file size is limited only by the operating system and the available disk space."
Since they use the same FoxPro DBF format, I would think the same holds true for A5? Perhaps it's the operating system that's choking.

                          Just a thought,

Want to add 160 to my system, but have been waiting for prices to come on the drives. How many G for $250? Source? (Still not sure about IBM drives tho - can't get the image of the IBM executive dumping cases of defective NEW drives off the back of his boat from a few years back.)
