Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Transferring 'dbf' file ?

    Transferring 'dbf' file ?

I'm unable to move(copy from a diskette) a dbf file from my laptop to desktop. On other databases in AlphaV this copying just the 'dbf' file works ok to update etc.
But on this one database most of the fields do NOT copy over correctly. Fields are exactly the same on both machines. Tried multiple times and days and still a no-go.

If you are copying "just" the .dbf file and it works for most tables but not for "this one", could it be that most of the tables have no indexes defined but "this one" does?

If this is the case you must copy the .cdx file as well.

Are all fields present but records are missing or are you actually winding up with fewer fields in the structure of the copied table as your first message suggests?

        RE: Transferring 'dbf' file ?

        Stan,
I copied the 'cdx' file along with the dbf and no improvement. Their are 7 fields and only the first one (names) comes through. Yes, index was defined or on as you surmised. Tried it with no index selected and still did not go. Fields are 'exactly' the same.
I am able to work-thru by copying all the files as it is one of my smallest db's and then it is ok; but the puzzle of why this is occuring is lingering.
Especially since my other db's go ok with just copying the 'dbf' to the floppy. Am I correct that copying just the 'dbf'for updating etc. is usually enough?
        Thx

Please clarify the situation for us.

Do you copy the table to your desktop, then examine the table on the desktop machine, and are missing data in all but the "names" field, or are all "fields" except names missing?

In other words, if you browse the table (default browse) do you see all field names as columns (but empty) or do you see only the names field column?

            Stan,
It occurs as you stated in your last sentence. I take the file to my desktop (floppy) and then examine it in the A5 browser and all the column headings are there, but empty. Except for the first column (names) which is filled in completely.
Actually I copy file to a floppy, and then on desktop run an 'append' operation with the genie.
Certainly an 'intellectual' challenge for this pilgrim.
            thx.

              RE: Transferring 'dbf' file ?

              Ok.

Sounds like your problem is in the append or the floppy disk file. Open the file on the floppy and see if the data is actually in that table.

Are you sure that the destop table is an exact duplicate (structure) of the laptop table? Any variation in field names will not accept the appended data.

              We'll get there.

                Stan,
Opening up the dbf file from the floppy does exhibit 'all' the data properly ! Wow.
Tried then to append again....same poor result. I will copy all the files from the laptop and let you know if next 'append' try works better when I need the update to occur. ( which should be during the week)
                Thanks much.

                  RE: Transferring 'dbf' file ?

Is the append a saved operation or a script?

Again, if the table on the desktop machine has different filenames, for any of the fields, than the table on the floppy, then the append will not "bring in" the values for those fields.

                  Keep plugging.
