Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I regret that I will not be able to attend.

I hope that I'll be able to purchase video tapes of the conferences similar to what was made available after
the Houston conference some time back.

Thanks for all of your efforts on this matter.

        Rich,

I'm sorry you will not be able to attend. We are definitely video taping the conference, but do not know at this time if tapes will be made generally available. But if they are available, we'll let everyone know.

If taping is done, why on earth would they not be made available to those of us who cannot make the conference? What other purpose could there be for them?

RE: Alpha Five Developer's Conference Web Site Inf

Taping is very useful to the speakers to improve their technique, and each speaker will get a copy of at least their portions, and possibly of sessions they were not able to be present for (if for example they were leading a group work session at the same time).

The time to edit the tapes (20 hours or so from 1 camera, and we may be running as many as 3 - one on the screen, one on the speaker and one on the audience) is at least 20 hours, even with digital video editing. If only a few people want a copy, the time is just not justified.

The cost of duplication (and I have not thoroughly investigated this) is about $12 per 2 hour VHS tape (at least as quoted from 2 different services). Add to that overhead in packaging and mailing them, which take time. Most facilities do not create 6 hour VHS tapes (and may not be sharp enough to view the screen activity - I'll need to verify this), and I have yet to even get a cost for 6 hour duplication.

These are just a few of of the challenges. It doesn't mean they can't be surmounted, but I don't want to commit to delivering the tapes if they are not done. As soon as I know, I will let everyone else know. If people have suggestions, please e-mail them to me and I will see what can be done.

We've updated the Conference's web site at

Alpha Five Developer's Conference Web site

There is even a local web cam that shows you the expressway traffic of the area near the hotel (If you know what you are looking at, the hotel is on the northbound side approximately 1/3 the way from the top)

For those of you thinking about coming, we invite you to submit a registration form with any topics you'd like to hear about so we can better tailor the conference for you. Even if you can't make it, we'd be interested in your thoughts and ideas.

To see the conference without the Alpha Software frame, type the following into your browser

                To All,

Selwyn Rabins (President of Alpha Software to people who don't know) has said he will talk (along with 1 or more key programmers) a bit about A5V6 (the Client-Server) version at the conference! If you are not already salivating for A5V5, you will be for A5V6!

                Hope to see you there!

Any idea when it will be available?.
