Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Total of current records

While posting payments to a customers account I would like to be able to see the total payments for the current customer. The payment table consists of:
    CustomerID
    Date
    Deposit Number
    Total Paid
I would like the total for the current CustomerID on the Payment Entry Form. The first entry is the CustomerID field.
This would be for display only and not saved. So there is no field to display the info in. Is it possible to display a temperary field on the form without the field being in the table or a calculated field.

    Thanks
    Lloyd

    RE: Total of current records

Create an index on your Payments table based on CustomerID, and name the index "CustomerID"
Create a calculated field using the dbsum function
    dbsum(c dbasefile,c tagname,a keyvalue,c field)
    e.g dbsum("Payments","CustomerID",CustomerID,"Total Paid")
where Payments is the name of your payment table
and "CustomerID" is the name of the index on the Payments table, based on the CustomerID field

Put the value on any form that is based on a table with the CustomerID field in it.

I can't seem to get this function to work the way I want it to.
If I hard code the Customer_ID it works
        dbsum("Payments","Customer_ID","NTA1162","Total_Paid)
        but,
        dbsum("Payments","Customer_ID","Customer_ID","Total_Paid")
always returns zero. I also tried
        dbsum("Payments.dbf","Customer_ID","Payment_Entry->Customer_ID","Total_Paid") this also returns zero.
        What am I doing wrong???
        Thanks

          RE: Total of current records

You do not put quotes around the keyvalue customer ID

          dbsum("Payments","Customer_ID","Customer_ID","Total_Paid")

          becomes

          dbsum("Payments","Customer_ID",Customer_ID,"Total_Paid")

It is confusing as you have an index called Customer ID, which DOES go in quotes, and the field called Customer ID which is interpreted as the value in the current Customer ID field, except when you put it in quotes it looks for a customer ID called "Customer ID". There isn't one, so it correctly calculates the dbsum as 0, and tells you.

I always get the functions from the drop down list to remind me what bit of info goes where.

            RE: Total of current records

            Thanks Stephen that did it.

I noticed in the expression builder that the dbsum function is listed as :
            dbsum(c dbasefile, c tagname, a keyvalue,c field name)
Am I correct in thinking that if the value is preceded by a "c" then quotes are required and if preceded by an "a" they should not be used.

No - you can use other functions to get each value.
The c means the result must be a character type object. n means numeric, l logical, and I don't know what "a" is...If you look at the function you can usually tell what they want.
