Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Cpy Flds in currnt tbl & post to other tbl

    I have a set with a one to many link from (clients - parent) to (debtors - child). On one of the fields (dunsent1) in dtrs tbl, when changed, I want an event (OnChange) to run which will copy the values from 4 fields from the set, 2 fields in debtors and 2 fields from clients, then open another table (Finance)and post the values to 4 fields in that table, then close that table. All this shld be done "behind the scenes".

    Any and all help would be appreciated.

    Look at the field rules options, especially posting. You should be able to do all the things you specify with a series of field rules for your "dunsent1" field.
    There can be only one.

      I will review them again but I want to be able to capture and copy the field values from the current table i'm in (after I depart or change the dunsent1 field) and enter a new record with into a closed, existing table.

      The new record has 10 fields but needs data from the current record from another table.

        If you want a new record you will have to write a script for an event for your dunsent1 field. It could be the onchange or ondepart event.

        In pseudocode:

        capture current values to variables
        get a pointer to the other table (also opens table)
        put other table in enter mode
        fill in fields with variables established earlier
        commit enter
        close other table
        There can be only one.

          Yeah, I conceptually know what I want to do and
          have tried various syntax, even got it to open the new table and fill in one of the fields but when the code went to fill in the fields from the child table it errored out.
          couldn't find the subelement i think it was - anyways, back to the manual.

          if debtors->dunsent1 >01/01/90 then
          debtors->nextltr = "2"
          tbl=table.current()
          fld1=tbl->clientid.value_get()
          fld2=etc
          fld3=etc

          tbl=table.open(C:dccfinance)
          tbl.enter.begin()
          finance->clientid = fld1
          etc
          etc
          tbl.enter.close
          else
          endif

            Try something like:

            if dunsent1.value >01/01/90 then
            debtors->nextltr = "2"
            tbl=table.current() 'gets pointer to current record of parent
            tbl1=table.current(2) 'gets pointer to current record of child
            tbl2=table.open("dccfinance.dbf") 'gets pointer to dccfinance
            tlb2.enter_begin() 'begins enter in dccfinance
            tbl2.field1=tbl1.field1 'assigns values from current record to dccfinance
            tbl2.field2=tbl1.field2
            tbl2.field3=tbl.field1
            tbl2.field4=tbl.field2
            tbl2.enter_end() 'ends entry into dccfinance
            endif
            end

              Just currious, is the field that fills in a linking index to the parent.

                  Yes - the clientid field is common to all three tables
