Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Searching through directories.

    Is there anway to have Alpha 5 find a specific directory. Let say I wanted to start at "C:" and have it search all directories and sub-directories untill it finds "C:Program FilesA5V4". Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    RE: Searching through directories.

    Jamin:

    If you know which folder you want then all you need is (remembering that the board eats backslashes, so I'm going to use forward slashes instead)

    folder="C:/Program Files/A5V4"
    dir_put(folder)

    In addition to dir_put() you also have dir_get(), dir_create() and dir_remove(). I don't think that there is a way to search throuvgh folders but if what you needed was to find out where A5 is installed, then you could use the
    :A5.Get_Exe_Path()
    method which will return the full drive and path to the running program folder.

      Thanks Finnian

      I was just using that for an example. I think I could create a search application but I was kind of testing the waters for somone who had already done it.

        If all you want is a directory listing, you could

        '====
        folder="C:"+Chr(92)
        dir_put(folder)
        filename=ui_get_file("ALL FILES","*.*)
        '====

        which will start you out with a standard file dialog at the top level.

          RE: Searching through directories.

          Hi Again

          WHat I am trying to do is this. I work in a hospital in the Bio-Medical department. We fix the medical equipment. We have to keep all written work when working on equipment. We also have a really CRAPPY database called HECS(I asked them to let me build a new one but they said no). What we do is we use Paperport and scan our written work in and file it under the correct directory within Paperport. We have approximately 5,000 pieces of equipment. WHat I am attempting to do is have an app that runs all the time on a computer. The Bio-Med techs will scan their written work into 1 folder and type the correct Work Order number on it. The app will search the directory every 10-15 minutes and when something is found, will file it in the correct folder. This eliminates lots of time. Our server is not very fast and it takes a long time to file the written work.

          So I need it to read the file name. Search HECS using ODBC for the asset number, find the directory in Paperport with the same number and file it there.

          I am stuck on what would be the fastest way of doing it but I have options that I am working on now. It should be pretty cool when I get done with it.

          Thanks
          Jamin
