Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Live Database Discussion Forum Now Open

    Live Database Forum
    ===================

I have set up a website that will allow for interactive, live real-time discussions for users seeking assistance with database issues. The primary database of focus will, of course, be Alpha Five. The site is completely voluntary and may or may not be staffed by knowledgeable users at any
particular time. If you have a very pressing issue, it may be worth checking the site to see if someone there may be able to assist.

This effort is entirely my own and is not endorsed nor supported by Alpha Software. You will not be able to converse with Alpha Software engineers on this site, but it is possible that one or more may offer input at various times. The sole intent is to offer an additional method of
interaction among Alpha Five users and developers. Your first source of information will remain the Alpha Software Message Board, where everyone may share in the fact-finding.

The site will be up and running immediately. It will take some time for users to get accustomed to it so don't expect a full house immediately. I will attempt to be of assistance whenever possible. I would hope that a few of the seasoned veterans may come and offer assistance to users if needed.

The site is available for your use 24/7.

If you are wondering, I obtained permission from Alpha Software prior to posting this message, but please, do not take that as an endorsment.

    The site address is:

    http://database.netonecom.net

    Tom,

This a GREAT idea, I guess the site will be very busy fast, and even more when the version become available.

I am still a neophyte with Alpha5 but I am looking forward to try it, and participate if I can.

    Thanks

    JP

I'm surprised. The web chat applet at http://database.netonecom.net is not half bad for a web chat. And the site shows the address to use with mIRC or your favorite IRC client.

Now when are you going to have the housewarming? what kind of files can I bring to share?

One of the users hinted at an idea. Perhaps having a topic some evening to discuss on-line that would benefit those wishing to learn more about the inner workings of Alpha Five. If there are topics you would like to see discussed, please bring them up.

Transferring files would be better done here than via the Live Discussion forum. It can be done, but the methodology isn't nearly as robust and reliable as what is already in place on the Message Board.

Do you suppose we could get some brave beta testers to answer a few questions on the new version? I know we are promised JPGs but no GIFs and such. But I have stupid questions like does hiding Control Panel still mess up the Windows menuitem and such.

There would probably have to be a disclaimer that all "answers" were really guesses, but every little bit helps.

When using an IRC program such as Pirch, what is the server name?

I'm sure Tom will clarify this but I think you use:

              http://database.netonecom.net

              and connect to

              #database
              There can be only one.

RE: Live Database Discussion Forum Now Open

#database is the room name, Pirch wants to know the IRC (which is "I forget now but it has onenet.net ending") and the server name. I need to know the server name. I use Pirch quite a bit and am fairly famikliar with it.

                  Thank you,
                  Ed

Pirch is very simple yet very effective. It is downloadable from the net and I can help you get started.

That is true Tom, but Pirch requires a server name as well as the IRC steerage.

Thanks Ed, I downloaded Pirch and have two choices for icons, Pirch98.exe and Pirchvdo.exe. I suspect the 1st one is the one to use. If so, what's the 2nd one for. Sometimes it's better to ask than to start playing.

                          Thanks,

Pirch is powerful and full-featured, but a bit complex for novices.

Xircon is less powerful, but simpler.

mIRC has a good balance of features versus simplicity. I'd recommend it.
