Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

One-many child runs out of gas??

I have a customer with a one-many child, using a Windows peer-to-peer network. The PARTNO field in the child has a table lookup to PARTS, and is set to pop-up on mismatch.

She can enter about 4-5 new records successfully. However, when entering a valid part number in the next record, the pop-up appears, and the list only contains a few records (PARTS has about 3000 records). She has to exit the program and open again. Upon reopening, the part number that caused the problem goes in without a problem. In cases where she has to enter many new records (20-30), she has to close several times.

Any thoughts?? I cannot duplicate this problem on my computer (mine is stand-alone).

RE: One-many child runs out of gas??

    Bill,

I have a few questions before I would hazard a guess.

    1. Is she the only one entering these numbers?

    2. If not, has anyone else on the network had this problem even occasionally?

    3. Is she using shadowing or directly accessing the data across the network?

    4. Is her computer very different from the others on the network?

    5. Did this just start after working successfully for a period of time?

One guess I will hazard is one of the configuration settings for her computer. It may even be so simple as to be almost unsolveable. For example, I set up our peer to peer today for an IDSL modem. We have 3 workstations and 2 laptops that each had their own modem. I had to reset the connections on 4 of the 5 so that they would use the LAN connection and no longer dial out on the regular modem. The 5th was one of the laptops that connected automatically to the LAN ISDL modem. In checking it out, I found that you had 3 choices for connection. 1. Always dial default setting, 2. Dial default setting if LAN connection not detected, and 3. Never dial out. Now here is the kicker. We just received the new LAN cards last Wednesday for both lap tops. Since I also manage the LAN, I installed both cards (same brand and model number) and drivers on each. Both were cut and dried. However, my laptop was configured to always dial while the other laptop was configured to dial if the network was not detected.

The point is, the problem may not be with A5 or your app. It may be something in the network.

Oran, thanks for your reply. I'll check the settings.

To answer your questions, her computer is almost identical to the others, other people have this problem, the program is Runtime, running in a shadow (network optimized).

One thing that seems to clear the problem, but compromises the function, is to remove the filter in the lookup. They have two internal companies, and the filter is used to show only those parts for the company they are using. I took the filter out, and (so far) it seems to work, but this leaves open the possibility that someone could enter the wrong part number.

        Bill,

Is the filter a field rule or xbasic?

          The filter is:

          PARTS->CO_ID=VAR->CO_ID

where the variable is always set prior to data entry. PARTS is the child (lookup) table.
