    Default HELP file authoring tools....Suggestions?

Does anyone have suggestions about HELP AUTHORING TOOLS.

What tool does ALPHA use to edit their help files?

    Thanks for any inputs.

    Regards Rich

You might check the archives for this subject -- it's been covered before, including just a few days ago.

There are a few freeware / shareware products available on the web that have been recommended to me, though I'm sorry I don't remember the name of any of them.

I bought RoboHelp and like it a lot. Yeah, it's expensive, but it's the industry standard and very, very versatile.

Search this site for Helpmatic...read the comments including where to get it. Demo is fully functional but includes banners of unregistered status.

Jake recommended it, I bought it, it works. Cost 40 bucks. I get context sensitive help from pressing F1. I am a hobbyist at this stuff and figured it out with all sorts of bells and whistles. Never finished it though - there is more to writing a help program than meets the eye and it has nothing to do with the Help program - you need to be concise, organized, yet detailed and flexible. Takes a little prazctice.

We use a program called Help & Manual 2. It creates both Windows and HTML help files. It also gives you the ability to print the help file with a fully referenced index and table of contents section, automatically numbered. It seems to be a good program and worked well for us. You can check it out at http://www.ec-software.com.

I like HelpNDoc's personal edition because not only is it FREE (small watermark) but it does just about everything needed for a decent CHM help file that Alpha can use. And at the top of every page there is title bar that if you right click and select properties, you can copy the part of the path you need for Alpha to link to that topic (from the last backslash in the string) - even several levels deep; by specifying toc:/topicname.htm

Check out their online help HelpNDoc.com

If you copy your chm file to the app directory and rename it to a_YOURAPPNAME_help.chm, Alpha will offer that as the default for entering the path to the help file in the Help properties tab. So with your help file open you just copy and paste. Which if I knew that from the get-go would have saved me a couple of hours trying to figure it out!
