Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Network Printer Problems

I have an application based on an NT Network. As part of the application, a user completes a work order then has the option to print it by using a button. It should print on the network printer. In the reports in the application, I have configured the report to use the network printer under specify printer. It's not working properly. I tried to change the report settings where as the user would be able to see the settings--but this is not working all the time either. The network printer is setup on every workstation. Also, if I try to print a document through the network printer using another program such as word, then it prints that document.

    Your help is badly needed!!!

    While we think about this...

Does the report print to the wrong printer or not print at all?
    There can be only one.

      Ted,

Perhaps the report is corrupt. As a test, make a new (simple) report from scratch and see if the settings function properly.

You have packed the database, haven't you. If not, do that first.

        Stan,

        The report doesn't print anywhere.

        Thanks.

          Ted,
If you specify the printer, then each computer has to use EXACTLY the same name for that printer. Under NT, each computer could have a different name for that network printer.

I finally decided to set up the network printer as the default and print to the default printer.

              Pat,

I tried making the network printer the default and still did not get a printout.

              Thanks,

                RE: Network Printer Problems

That report can contain errors in calculated fields that will prevent it from printing. I have had the same thing happen and A5 won't report all errors like you might expect when attempting to print.

I discovered my problem when I tried to preview the report first. At that point, A5 indicated an error in one of the calculated fields (as I recall, it was looking for a non-existent field). Fixed that and all was well from then on.

If you find it is only that report that will not print, then chances are very good that a calculated field is indeed the problem.

The interesting factor I found was that the defective calculated field needn't be on the form, just on the pick list as an unused field.

If you can, attach your report and someone may be able to duplicate your problem and assist in a fix.

                  Tom,

I went and did as you suggested but the report seemed fine. I finally went to the report settings and had to specify the printer and show print settings before printing--which is not what I really wanted--but that's life.

                  Thanks for your help.

                    Pat,

I thought about what you suggested and made many changes where I specify the printer in the report settings. Also, I had to have the print settings show before printing--which is not what I really wanted to do-but--. This allowed the report to print. I went back and unselected showing the printer setting and it stopped printing. I don't understand why it only works with showing the settings but it does. If you can think of a solution, I would appreciate it.

                    Thanks,

                    Ted

                    P.S.

All who replied were a great deal of help--thanks

I use nt4 and to do what you indicated I installed on each computer the network printer. I found that on some of my computers I didn't correctly install the network printer and the reports went to never never land.

Ted, from within Alpha Five, at the control panel, have you checked File Print Setup? It should point to the printer you are trying to use, I believe. You should check this value at each work station. -- tom
