Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 Conference Anyone?

A short time ago, I made a suggestion for a two day conference to be held a few months after V5 is released. My
guess is there would be more than enough to talk about and learn. There are quite a number of you that are very capable of speaking and teaching. It would not need to be a money maker but enough to cover expenses.

Depending on the situation, we have some of the top resorts in the country that have great accommodations and are sites conferences all the time. The airport is only 20 minutes away. If that worked out, I would be glad to do all the leg work on this end as I've have contacts at some of the resorts in arranging conferences.

Selwyn responded with: "I think that this is a great idea.
There is a huge amount of new stuff in A5 that will have enormous implications for developers on the kinds of applications that they can develop, and the increase in sophistication of these applications.

Also, it would be useful to outline the direction we see for version 6, 7 and beyond.

    I am all for it."

To spare the space on this board and to check out the interest, contact me via email. If you have any suggestions, send that as well. My interest is peaked. How about your's?

    RE: A5 Conference Anyone?

    Ken:

Coincidentally, about a week ago, I sent Peter Wayne a message asking him if it was time to revive the "Developer's Conference" idea we had talked about last year.

Getting a good attndance depends on having plenty of advance notice so people can plan. So, if we're thinking of having such a conference during 2000, it's almost past time to pick a date. So, without putting undue pressure on Selwyn ......

It might be a good idea if a sign-up sheet could be placed somewhere on the web where people could enroll and give their best guess at the likelihood of their attendance.

        RE: A5 Conference Anyone?

        Finian,

So far, the response has not been overwhelming. A dozen or so. The last I heard from Selwyn via a post, was that V5 would be out in mid fall or later depending on V5 progress. This doesn't need to be an elaborate event, but my thoughts are that perhaps some of the more proficient folks, such as you, would be willing to make a presentation.

I would like to see a committe of 5, or so, set up via email to determine course content & schedule. Attendance will factor on three things; subject matter, cost and location. Perhaps you and a few others would be gracious enough to suggest topics, etc.? You've been around a lot longer than I have so you know this part much better than I. I've had experience in putting a conferences together and I'm willing to do whatI can. It will have to be a team effort.

As far as Selwyn is concerned, my thoughts are for him to be involved to whatever extent he has time for. He will have to determine a projected date of the conference to take place 3-5 months (or whenever he thinks is best) after the relaese of V5. I would like him to make the best use of this event to promote A5v5, etc. He can relay that information to the committee chair.

Anyhow, those are my thoughts. I have no corner on the market so whatever suggestions anyone has, I'm all ears, well, in this case, eyes.

        Thanks for comments.

There's no perfect location but here's one thought (or a few) for what their worth. California and the West Coast may sound, "cool" but Massachusetts has a fine rep for high tech and in so far as the NY Users Group is substantial the East Coast might work as well as the West.

Regarding the date, why not give Version 5 a chance to settle in with at least those one or two patch files that seem so essential.

If this is a first time program, then why not control the cost a little, and keep it close to home. Anyplace within driving distance of NY and I'll be there!

            RE: A5 Conference Anyone?

Perhaps burning a CD (or a few) of sample v5 scripts would be in order. This could aid in developers more rapidly assimilating the new features of v5, and give them a jump start in creating some rather complex applications. In a few days I'll be starting to look at a method to convert v5 forms to (hopefully) pure HTML via operations and scripts, allowing A5 to become a rapid development front end for Cold Fusion database apps with A5. (Since I'm just starting in Cold Fusion and I have a fairly full schedule this might take a little while). I'd be willing to add this to the CD.

Other sections might contain inventory system, accounting, personnel, job tracking, etc. Not only would this help advance the general knowledge base of newer A5 programmers by providing a number of real life examples of v5's features, but perhaps (assuming it is good enough) a version could be added to A5's release commercial package, thereby increasing the number of A5 installations and general acceptance in the business community (which leads to more viability for more A5 programmers). Perhaps the CDs would only be free during the seminar, and sold through Alpha (with royalties to the developers) as an extra product.

Think of being able to spend, say $150, to get a CD with everything needed to become fully immersed in A5. Modifiable to meet your company's needs. Maybe a $250 package which has all the A5 apps you need to set up Cold Fusion based web page with a shopping cart system, etc.

I guess we wouldn't want to put too much hefty code in there, or the consultants might lose a little business.

              RE: A5 Conference Anyone?

I love the idea of a conference. My idea is to have a 3-day conference, each day devoted to a skill level; beginners, intermediate, and advanced users. That way, I think there would be a greater response, which ultimately could put Alpha out on the market en masse. I have had very frustrating situations of trying to convince the powers that be to go with Alpha instead of Access. I've managed to talk my current employer (the County) into allowing me to use Alpha, which was no easy feat. I greatly respect Selwyn for not joining up with Micro Soft, however I would love to see more people using Alpha - and the only way that will be realized is for the word to spread farther and faster than it has ever been spoken before.

I wonder if we could somehow attract those database developers who have created monstrous (and absolutely useless) programs for the counties and states (and undoubtedly the Feds). Wouldn't it be a wonderful place if the IRS really knew you paid off all your tax bills? Or, if the City knew who didn't pay their property taxes? The lack of accurate data out there simply amazes me. Alpha and a few good developers could solve thousands of errors.

              I'll quit rambling, now.

BTW - California would be a great place for the conference.

I suggest a video conference. Yah, you heard me. It's (note proper useage of contraction) one of those new and exciting technologies! Why not?

Of course, if it is in Michigan, it doesn't matter :)

                  RE: A5 Conference Anyone?

                  I have actually already done some prep work for a Boston area "Developer's Conference" when Ken brought up the idea on the Web. Just to throw some of the issues out for people's consideration are;

                  1. Length of the conference - 2 days on a weekend, possible adding a Monday or Friday to it. Alternatively, special courses could be added taught by the speakers on Friday/Monday for additional cost that those speakers would charge

                  2. Cost of the conference - probably about $150 per person including lunch and continental breakfast both days (price could vary a lot as details are nailed down). A Saturday night dinner would probably be held at a local restaurant for those interested.

                  3. Cost of rooms - $170/night (1 or 2 occupancy) during "Fall Foliage weekends" for September/October time frame (this is about as high as the price would be - there are other cheaper hotels nearby as well), possibly cheaper if moved to late October/November (but no later than weekend of 11/19) The conference would not be held weekends of 10/1 and 10/9 due to those who may be Jewish.

                  4. Cost of Airfare, train driving to the conference

                  5. Cost of transportation to/from airport. Boston is about $30 each way, for the other 2 airports either rent a car or take a shuttle/limosine

                  Key Advantages of Boston are;
                  1. Closer to offices of Alpha Software in Burlington, MA about 15 minutes away.
                  2. 3 Airports in the area (Boston 1/2 hr drive, Manchester NH about 1 hr drive, Providence RI about 1 hr drive) Advantages of the farther airports are cheaper airfares (ala SouthWest) and an easier (but longer potentially) drive.
                  3. Since there are probably few Pacific Rim users (Or speak up if I am wrong!) Boston is sort of the middle between the UK (which I know has lot's of users) and California (which has lots of earthquakes, fires, floods, mudslides etc)
                  4. Great Seafood
                  5. I don't have to drive far -- OK that's not really an advantage for others but I had to throw it in! :?)

Some people have talked about waiting for A5 Version 5 to come out before having a conference. I personally think it better to have it before or around the time of A5 Version 5 introduction so that people can start to get familiar with it and pitch it to their clients/bosses etc.

If anyone wants to e-mail me with comments or throw out other issues on the message board, feel free.

                        RE: A5 Conference Anyone?

I was rather ambivalent when this was first proposed (I'd love to meet some of the people out there but couldn't justify a trip just for that) BUT the addition of some V5 info could definitely change my mind.

Either just before the release or slightly afterward - as long as it was not so early that providing more details about the features and how to use them would be an issue.

Personally, I would prefer the idea of a weekend event with a Friday or Monday optional. Not only would that easier for me but we would probably get the best attendance that way.

Thanks to all who have responded either on this board or via email.

I believe, if a conference were held, it should begin on a Sunday (arrival & registration) or a Tuesday or Wednesday. There are some who would not be able to attend on Saturday for religious reasons and we should honor that.

I have received valuable input from some but please keep submitting suggestions. It will help make the conference a success.

(Stan, how's that? Instead of "keep the suggestions coming". I'm putting more thought into my grammar!)

As a flegeling A5 guy, I am particularly interested in a conference. Attended a A4 conference in Houston hosted by Sherry Martin, formerly at Alpha Forum and would like to see a few of you principals again.

Keep us advised. Traded some information with Gary Smith and I guess early December would be just fine from this point.

As a new writer, the suggestions I would have for presentations would be so pathetically basic that they would be of no interest to any of you who already know all that stuff. Still would be great to sit in.
