Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Pop-Up on Mismatch and blanks

    My users love the Pop-up on Mismatch field rule. I would like to have all the features of this type of look-up with the ability for a user to blank the field out (if they previously entered a value) and not be required to enter a valid value from the look up table.

    If you tab through this type of field and do not enter anything then you are in luck. If you enter a valid value, move on, and then come back to blank it out you are in trouble, it demands to have a value in it.

    Anyone know how to have your cake and eat it too (in this instance)?

    Why don't you enter a blank record so that the value would be blank. I have not tried this but when I do Arrays I always set the first value to Blank and then continue with values there after. give this a try. Jack

      RE: Pop-Up on Mismatch and blanks

      It's easy - just put a blank field in the lookup list!

      Now the hard part - how do you put a blank field in the lookup list???

      I couldn't find a way to make it work with a simple list or cascading list - maybe someone else can. However, if you use a lookup TABLE, you can enter a record in the lookup table which has only a space character in the field. If the user then blanks out the field in the 'main' table, A5 evaluates the blank field as being the same as the field with nothing but a space. In other words, A5 evaluates "" = " " as true.

      Another advantage of lookup tables is that they allow you to create a routine, password protected if so desired, which allows the user to edit the lookup list even if they have only the runtime program. For some customers this can be an advantage, for some not.

      Here's a script I use on a button to create a blank field. This is used on a form which allows the user to edit the lookup table. I defined the 'group_name' field as "always required" which prevents the user from entering blank fields (and fields with nothing but spaces) manually. However, the script bypasses that field rule and creates the desired field - after checking to see if it already exists. ("Group_name" in this case is my field name; it has nothing to do with A5 report groups.)

      Code:
      tc = table.current()
      found = tc.fetch_find( " " )

      IF found > 0
         ui_msg_box( "WARNING", "Blank record already exists.", 16 )
         END
      END IF

      tc.enter_begin()
         GROUP->Group_name = " "
      tc.enter_end(.t.)

      parentform.resynch()

        This is how it is done on a cascading list
        a=done~a
        b=Continue~b
        c=Awaiting approval~c
        Blank~ (two spaces)
