    Default Report Printing Problem

I am a relative novice in designing applications with Alpha Five V4, relying heavily on Alpha Five's pre-defined commands and field rules. In other words, I have yet not gotten into writing my own code or scripts, although, I have done some minor editing of "actions" assigned to buttons on form layouts. That said, I have encountered a problem with an application that I have designed and hope someone can suggest a solution.

My application contains a form on which there are buttons for printing six different reports, each printing data from a different table. I have been using the application on my desktop computer, which uses the full Alpha Five V4, for at least a year, maybe more, with no printing problems. I am also using the application on my laptop, using a Runtime version of Alpha Five V4.03, and have encountered no problems.

Recently, I installed a Runtime version of Alpha five V4.03 and my application on the laptop of one of my colleagues. He is using a Winbook XL2 hooked to an HP LaserJet 4L. Five of the reports print fine, but the sixth report always hangs up the printer. Every time he tries to print that report, he gets an error message that the printer time-out has been exceeded. We have tried lengthening the time-out, but it doesn't help. I have hooked my portable printer (a Canon Bubblejet BJC-70) to his laptop, and the report prints fine. I have hooked my laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro) to his HP LaserJet 4L, and the report prints fine. This suggests to me that, perhaps, there is a communication problem between the Winbook and the LaserJet; however, he has no problems printing from his other programs.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have two 4L's and a Toshiba laptop and have never had any problems.

    Starting with the obvious.

Does he have the proper driver installed for the 4L and is the driver in use when he tries to print to it. You can, of course, try to print to a printer without selecting the proper driver, usually with unsatisfactory results.

Like I said this is the most likely source of trouble and probably has been checked, but.........

    Begin brainstorming...

I'd verify that the troublesome report will "preview" ok on the Winbook system. If it won't then there may be differences in the installed fonts on his system which are coming into play on this particular report, which do not occur on the others.

Are there different fonts in the layout of the troublesome report?

If it previews ok, but still won't print, are you sure it's not timing out because the wrong paper size is in the printer. Check the page setup properties of your report layout. Write them down. Then compare that to the page setup properties for the default page your friend's Winbook uses... i.e. the properties of the printer object in his system. Are there differences in this report's properties compared to the other layouts which are printing successfully. Are some using the "default" page, while other are using a "custom" page, for example?

    End brainstorming...

    -- good luck.

    Thanks for your response Stan.

We have re-installed his printer using the Windows 98SE driver for the 4L. As to whether it is in use, when he tries to print?....I'm assuming, yes.

    Thanks, again.

Select start menu, settings, printers, choose the one you have named for the 4L, right click, properties, details tab, "print using driver" should specify the driver you installed.
