Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

send a report to an email

How can I send a report in a5v4 to an e-mail.
This report needs to be tabulated so the columns will align

2nd quesions, I need to make a function that pops up my indexes, then I will make a selection and hold that index
    for later use.

    Thanks, Abe

RE: send a report to an email

    Couple of things,

If you want to maintain the formting of the report you could get a copy of Adobe Acrobat Writer, this would allow you to select a pdf file as an output device. You can then e-mail this.

The simpler option is to add a generic text only printer driver to windows and then print to a text file. You will probably have to fiddle with the allignments a bit, possibly set up the report with a fixed width font like courier. None of your formating will be reproduced (bold, italic and any lines, boxes etc).

Or you could hang around for version 5, I believe it has html output built in.

Chris's idea of Adobe Acrobat Writer is probably the easiest but it costs money.

If you want to use the Generic Text Printer (GTP), see the posting in the Code Archive about "Generic Text Reports" for some hints. (Ignore the first two postings - I had trouble getting the message board to take the posting correctly.)

Unfortunately, I never did get the GTP to work flawlessly. However, I have created some e-mailable HTML reports using Xbasic and the .write_line() command. For the result of one of these reports, see the attached file. This was my second one and it took me about 4 hours to create the complete Xbasic script. It has 3 groups and multiple fonts. If you are at all familiar with HTML, I can show you how I created it. (The attached sample is just some junk text with fictitious names so worry about the contents, just the format.)

Oops, sorry. I don't know how the first version of my message got sent. See the Code Archive for the HTML report.

RE: send a report to an email

We use eFax to send all of our email reports and faxed reports. It's very fast and you can annotate and add scanned signatures to the reports. The best part is it's free for emailing. If you want to send faxes you need to get an account with them. Since all of our faxes are normally sent out of state the .05-.10 per page is a bargain.

The first time you send somebody an eFax you send it as a small .exe that will install a viewer on their machine. After that you can send just them an .efx file which are very small (15-20k) The only difference from a pdf is they can't search the text.

You can see the details at www.efax.com

RE: send a report to an email

If you can use Xbasic to generate the numbers from the table and create a file on the drive that contains the same data as the report, you can use a utility called mailsend.exe, via sys_shell(), to send email directly from the command line with a file attachment. Your email would be in plain-text format, so keep that in mind.

Some reports are just too complex to create from Xbasic, so I have often resorted to a summarize operation and then used Xbasic to read that form into a table text file.

Export operations will also do the trick for creating the table text file.

I prefer the control I get from using Xbasic, but it's much more time-consuming if your experience with Xbasic is limited.

                    Goto http://www.radiks.net/jimbo/share.html#M

It's a demo, but the full version is only $10 and well worth it, I believe.

I'd be happy to give you any pointers you might need on using it.
