Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    copying layouts

I've created a report layout on my notebook computer which I want to back-up and copy to my office database....just the report layout.....nothing else.....how do I do that? What is the file extension for report layouts? Where do I find it?

    Thanks

    RE: copying layouts

    1. Copy the DB to destination system.
    2. Open the source or destination DB.
    3. Start A5v4 again and open the other DB.

        RE: copying layouts

It's not possible to copy a single layout in A5. You can Copy/Paste a layout from one table or set to another but that's not quite the same thing.

A5 stores all the layouts associated with a table in the *.ddd, *.ddm, *.ddx files for that table. Eg the layouts for customer.dbf are contained in customer.ddd, customer.ddm, customer.ddx. These files are referred to as the data dictionary for the table and contain forms, reports, field rules, scripts etc. Always keep a given group of files together.

A set is, by definition, its own data dictionary (no table data is stored in the set files) and they have the suffix *.sem, *.set, *.sex. Therefore to copy a report based on order.set you need to copy order.sem, order.set, order.sex.

You can copy the data dictionary for a table independent of the data, which is how most developers update their client files when they create new layouts or correct problems.

Copying the dsta dictionary from one location to another overwrites everything in that dd. So you do need to be careful that, in copying a data dictionary from one location to another, you don't overwrite a layout that you created in one place but forgot to transfer.

If you have any doubts you can copy all the files associated with a table (including the .dbf, and .cdx, .fpt (if they exist) to the new location, but don't overite their counterparts at that location, put them in a temp folder, for example. Then open the target database and Add the copied file in the temp folder to the database. Now you can see what layouts are contained in each set of files and Copy/Paste the new one into the target table.

          Finian,

There is an even easier method.

Bring up to copies of Alpha 5. Put them side by side with the forms tab of the control panel on both and make sure the source database's forms are in one and the the destination database's in the second. Now just visually compare and copy/paste from one window to the next.

            Hello Ira,

What a good idea, and so obvious once you point it out.
