Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Specific Record Focus in Browse

    I have a button on a form (attached to a set) that takes me to a custom browse attached to that same set. The button was created through the button genie ("open a browse") and contains the following script:

    if is_object("custbrws")then
    custbrws.show()
    custbrws.activate()
    else
    :Browse.view("custbrws")
    end if

    This always takes me to the first record in the set. What can I add to this script to focus the browse on the specific record I'm viewing in the form when the browse is activated? Example: viewing customer number 5 on the form, press button to view the browse, all records show but cursor is on customer number 5.

    thanks in advance.

      Becky I find it amazing that no has answered you. The code below will do what you ask however I think you would be better off to use a form with the new browse placed on it. This way you could put buttons on the form to close or switch back to the original form. Much more functional than a browse. The code will put the browse into record number order find the correct record. The second index_set line can be used to change to a diffrent index seemed to work in my tests.

      current_record = alltrim(str(recno(),10,0))
      if is_object("custbrws") then
      :custbrws.show()
      :custbrws.activate()
      :custbrws.index_set("")
      :custbrws.find(current_record)
      :custbrws.index_set("the index you would like the browse to be in")
      else
      :Browse.view("custbrws")
      :custbrws.index_set("")
      :custbrws.find(current_record)
      :custbrws.index_set("the index you would like the browse to be in")
      end if

        Ahhh.
        But how do you get the same thing to occur when going to a form based on a table in the set, short of using a query? (I'd love to get around having to use card_spawn(params) to get this functionality.)

          customer = customer->custid

          if is_object("Entry") then
          :Entry.show()
          :Entry.activate()
          :entry.index_set("custid")
          :entry.find(customer)
          else
          :Form.view("Entry")
          :entry.index_set("custid")

            Becky, not knowing exactly what you are doing, here's an idea that might be useful...

            Since your custom browse is attached to the same set, you might be able to put it either on the current form (if there is room) or on a tabbed subform. That way, a browse based on child records would only show data for the current parent record. Or, if the browse is based on the parent record, it will show a list of all records in the parent.

              The button genie will walk you right through this one. Just tell the genie yu want to open a new form and the genie will help generate the right code for your button to synchronize the new form with the browse to your current form.

                Allen -
                Thanks so much for your response. I entered the code as you outlined and the browse opens but I get the following error message:

                Trapped error in action command:[1]
                Command: Inline XBasic
                Error: Argument is incorrect data type

                When I "Ignore" on the message, It DOES take me to the record I want. So, I guess it's very close but do you see where the error is coming from?

                I did go ahead and create a form, as you suggested, and put the browse on it (A great suggestion which I think I'll end up using). Modified the same code to

                :Form.view("formname")

                instead of :Browse.view("custbrws").

                I get the same error message, but "ignore" in this case just takes me up to the first record again. Any suggestions? Thanks again!

                  Dr. Wayne-
                  I did try and do this through the button genie, but was only successful at callig up the default browse instead of the custom browse I'd created. What am I missing?

                    RE: Specific Record Focus in Browse

                    Becky you most likely put quotes around the variable current_record in the line

                    :formname.find("current_record")

                    should be

                    :formname.find(current_record) no quotes.

                          I'm delighted (and embarrassed) to tell you that I found my typo which was causing the error message. Your code works beautifully - Thanks so much for your help. I've used in on my browses. I'm now in the process of implementing your browse on form suggestion. I hope to just modify the code to Form.view instead of Browse.view and we'll see how that works. Thanks again.
