Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

premature page advance & ghost entries

I have developed an invoicing program consisting of 1 parent (invoice head) and 3 children. All children RI's are none. Child #1 is 1 to 1 and contains contract information. Child #2 is 1 to 1 and contains addresses. Child #3 is 1 to many and contains shipments and payment information. I have entered approximately a dozen invoices. Some of them are 1 page in length, some 2 pages, and a couple 3 pages in length.
On 2 invoices only 1 shipment appears on the first page and the remaining shipments begin on page 2. I have deleted all the shipments, the contract and invoice information. Restarted Alpha and re-entered the information with the same printing results. I have changed the order of entries but it doesn't have any effect on the printer output. On one try I was able to see a "ghost" entry, which consists of all "0"s in the numeric columns but after I deleted all the shipments and re-entered them, that "ghost" disappeared.
Also, on one other invoice there are 7 "ghost" lines with "0"s in the numeric columns. They do not show up any place except on the printout.
I have "packed" all the databases with no effect on the printout.
How can I eliminate the page advance after the first entry on the 2 invoices and eliminate the 7 ghost entries on a separate invoice. All the other invoices print out perfectly, its just these 3 that are giving me fits. Thanks for your ghostbuster help.

RE: premature page advance & ghost entries

Do you have more than 1 one-to-many links? We had a set with the structure (other 1-to-1 links not shown)

    parent
    = child_1 (invoice_type_1) (no further children)
    - child_2 = child_3 (same table as parent) (other 1-to-1 children)

where we were trying to get child_3 to work with the onRowDoubleClick feature to pull up historcial data.

Either we could get that feature to work with ghost invoice items as youi described, or we could drop child_3 and have accurate invoices. We could replicate this using the sets supplied with A5, and asked about it a couple months ago. Noone could come up with a reason. I could see how the ghosts would occur if there was another 1-to-many connected to child_1 (maybe even if there was another 1-to-many on the same set level), but not why it does when as above. The same problem existed in other sets with similar structures, and was further replicated in a test situations with very simple NEW tables with very basic indexes.

Maybe you have a similar set structure? We've ended up having to eliminate having more than 1 one-to-many per set, reguardles of where they exist in the set.

      Jim and Barbara:

With multiple 1:N links at the same level in a set design you probably should be using the subreport feature.

RE: premature page advance & ghost entries

        Hi Bill,
Thanks for the suggestion. I only had 1 child that was 1 to many so I don't think that is my problem. However, I did take your suggestion and created a subreport. It doesn't split the printing however I did run into 2 additional problems.
#1 I cannot get the second page header to print. I have used so many different methods but it doesn't seem to work. I used my original report format as a guideline because that worked. What I have setup now is a Continuation Header for Group Invoice Number; Group Invoice number header; details; and a subreport footer.
All the invoices print correct information but they do not print the continuation header for second/third pages.
ALSO, each print job starts with a blank sheet and ends with a blank sheet.
Do you have any suggestions on how to resolve this problem or is there another way around my original design since I only have 1 child that is 1 to many? Thanks for your help.
