Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

RE: Rich Text Memo vs Memo Fields

    Selwyn & Jake,

Glad to hear V5 hill have this capability. WIll it also have formating capabilities similar to a word processor?

I utilized Dr. Wayne's Xbasic script suggestion and it works just fine. It incorporates Jakes suggestion of the key strokes. The only remaining problem is that I can only view 32 characters of text. I would like to view enough text to occupy 3 lines.

Thanks for your suggestions, past and future.

Ken I have figured out a way to do what you want. It takes alot of xbasic. In short you create a character field that you import a text file into. this file is copy and pasted from the rtf field. Then you can see the first 255 chacters. This is just for your viewing pleasure. When you enter that field a popup form is activated and it contains only the RTF field. Which you can then add to or edit.

RE: Rich Text Memo vs Memo Fields

        Jack,

I'm using the following Xbasic on the CanEditField in the field rules to enter a memo field and automaticly opens the full page: sys_send_keys("{Alt-Down}") (Peter Wayne's suggestion)

Then, I set the characters to 255 and turned on word wrap. Does your method have an advantage over this?

From what I'm finding out, a RTF is not the best to use in this situation. Selwyn stated that this problem will be solved when V5 comes out. If it will have formating capabilities like a word processor, then it will be far and away over A97 or A2000. If you have $299 burning a hole in your pocket, you can buy an addon to format. That's a spendy enhancement.

I sure appreciate your efforts. (You wouldn't want to know how easy this is to do in A97) Not a promo for A97 but it does do some things easier. However, it has it's limits and that's why A5 is so nice.

RE: Rich Text Memo vs Memo Fields

          Ken,
I am not sure what you mean when you say you only see 32 characters of tesxt.
Do you mean in regular browse view, or after you open the memo editor?

Another way to handle the viewing of the memo field is
to have a browse of the record, but to place the
memo fields directly on the form. You can then size the
(unexpanded) memo fields to whatever size you wish. As you scroll
from record to record in your browse, the memo field contents
will be replaced with the contents of the current record's
memo. Would that not satisfy your needs?
If this isn't clear, email me your sample data tables and I'll
email a sample form/browse combination back to you.

RE: Rich Text Memo vs Memo Fields

            Peter,

It showed only 32 characters while in the browse. My problem was that I had created a browse and set the character to 255 and checked word wrap. However, when I added the browse to the form, I created another browse (embedded) rather than selecting the browse I had already created, thus the new browse's properties were not set properly. That taken care of, I can now see three lines of text on the display.

However, your suggestions sounds intriguing. I'll contact you via email.

Thanks for reading this post and your suggestion.
