Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    QBF Operators

I can't find the right operators to get the query to give the result I want. Please provide suggestions.
I have a table with approx 2000 item numbers. Format C12
Field name ITEM My list of item numbers may go something like this:
    .
    .
    02324
    03456
    42701
    42701-wb
    42702
    42702-wb
    780VA
    .
    .

I want to do the QBF to find only the 42701 and the 42702, I do NOT want the item numbers with the -wb (keep in mind that this is a simple example, there are nearly 50 items that will be the end result of the query)
What parameters do I enter to get the results I want?
    Thaks

    RE: QBF Operators

Try Query by Table instead. You could build a filter expression there which is tied to the trimmed length of the field *and* set the desired range, too.

    something like

    len(trim(item))= 5 .and. Item >= "42701" .and. Item

      RE: QBF Operators

The data input personnel are very good using A4V6 search and they will have a hard time understanding the table method in A5. I want the transfer A4 to A5 to be flawless.

In the query operators do you use the & sign or .and. to preform an AND function? The help from A5 does not show any AND operator nor does the Acrobat version. Am I confused or what??? Or am I blind as a bat in my old age????

      Thanks

        RE: QBF Operators

To use an .and. operator in QBF, you use a comma.

          RE: QBF Operators

To correct to my previous reply, when the user selects QBF, he/she simply enters ... 42701,42702 in the ITEM field. This will only gives items that are exactly 42701 or 42702. So I guess the comma is actually acting as the .OR. operator.

This criteria performs the proper query in A4V6. What is the equivalent in A5V4 :

            *427*&*-*

            Thanks

The QBF operators are listed at pg 37 in the User Guide.

I have tried all the possible operators...I CANNOT get A5 to search and give the results I want. Refer to my reply earlier relative to the parameters that works in A4V6. What is the equivalent in A5?

                Thanks

                  RE: QBF Operators

It does not appear that the QBF operators support combining two filter criteria with "And".

If you don't want to use Query by Table, I suppose you could use a series of dialog boxes (or perhaps a single form, with lots of checkboxes) to collect the current search criteria from the user, and then attach a script to a button which builds and runs a new query based on the values supplied by the user.

                  It's not the same, but...

                    RE: QBF Operators

That is part of the frustration, hopefully someone at Alpha can tell us for sure if the "and" operator has been deleted or is there a different way to perform the query. This should be a simple task.

                      RE: QBF Operators

Once you enter criteria in the QBF form, you can then click on "Query" on the menu where you have a choice to modify the filter expression as you need.

I think that to modify your A4V6 expression you can just substitute .AND. for the & symbol.

                        Finian,
I know that I had tried that, just to make sure I tried your suggestions and still get the correct search. In fact it comes back with NO RECORDS FOUND or similar message.

                        :( Phil

                          Pssst.

Here's a workaround, but don't tell the RDM purists. Add another (calculated) field to your structure called ITEM2. Set its expression equal to ITEM. See where I'm going? Users would enter the "include" condition (i.e. 427*) in ITEM, and the "exclude" condition (i.e. *-*) in ITEM2. I admit that this solution is a bit inelegant, but it does work (and on an inventory of 2000 items, it should be only a small disk space/performance burden). The method becomes impractical for more than 2 conditions.

                          Good luck

                          Tony

                            Try this one...

                            LIKE("*427*",Item).AND..NOT.LIKE("-",Item)

                              RE: QBF Operators

The QBF syntax does not support an AND operator within a field.

However, you do not have to add a new calc field to your table as has been suggested.

Alpha Five allows you to define the form to be used for QBF.

Specify a different form, and place the field that you want to search in on the form several times.

Then you can put criteria in each of the multiple instances of the field and they will be anded together.
