Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

ATI Mach 64 and Network issues?

I was over trying to help Dave Jones today and was unsuccessful. Dave has posted his problem a couple times on this board but is still having trouble.(see subjects: 'Selwyn Alpha 5 crashes on network' and 'Alpha 5 - network crash')

We think there might be a problem between the video board and the network. The program works fine when he runs it on his local computer. When he runs it on the network (shadowed or not) it runs fine UNTIL he exits - then the system locks up and he has to give it the three finger salute.

If he starts Windows98 in the safe mode, it runs OK. So, today we took every startup program out of his StartUp folder, win.ini file, and registry 'run' and 'runservices' lines. The only thing we left was the network programs. Then we disabled the video acceleration and disk read-ahead optimization but the problem still occurred.

His network is Novell (3.11?) and the video board/driver is ATI Mach64 Rage Pro Turbo AGP 2x.

His next plan is to bring in another Novell expert to see if he can find something his local IT person missed. If that doesn't work, he may have to scrap a year of A5 work and switch to Access - as it stands, his A5 app. does everything he wants but is useless without the network. FYI, ANY A5 app including the sample apps will cause the problem - its not something he did in his application.

Is there a way to 'disable' his video board and run with plain SVGA? I'd swear there is but can't remember how to do it. I wanted to try this to confirm if it was video related.

Any chance there is a way to determine what memory locations were being accessed at the time of the failure? If so, could we protect those memory locations like we used to do when using himem in DOS?

Anyone have any other ideas? I hate to lose an otherwise happy A5 user to Access. (Besides, he's already tried Access and he's not looking forward to using it but may not have an alternative.)

RE: ATI Mach 64 and Network issues?

Is the video board part of the motherboard? If not, wouldn't it be worth swapping in another video board?

Also check with the video board manufacturer and make sure he has the latest drivers. Or, just try a different driver version.

      Cal:

Have you tried turning off the video acceleration setting in the control panel?

It's under System Properties/Performance where you can play with the hardware settings of the graphics accelerator.

Oops, sorry - disregard, I see you did that already.

RE: ATI Mach 64 and Network issues?

He has already loaded the latest driver.

He would consider trying another board to define the problem but this would create another problem - he has about 50 identical machines (purchased last year) that would all need new boards! We're hoping for a more cost effective solution.

PS: With Bill Warner's help I finally figured out where to set the display to SVGA. Maybe this will help identify what's happening. Also, I plan to have Dave run msconfig.exe and try the EMM Exclude A000-FFFF option.

RE: ATI Mach 64 and Network issues?

Based on some past experiences, if the video card is not part of the motherboard (or if the built-in one can be disabled with a jumper or switch), I would at least try some other relatively inexpensive video card. That would at least help to isolate the problem. I don't know about the ATI Mach 64 but there are some video cards that just are not compatible with A5. If this turns out to be the case, you might at least try getting the PC vendor to swap cards (good luck on that, however).

RE: ATI Mach 64 and Network issues?

I have had some ATI compatability problems with non-A5 applications on my company's NOVELL workstations. The solution, however, was to downgrade the video driver a step. You may want to throw this idea into the hat as a troubleshooting possibility, also.

RE: ATI Mach 64 and Network issues?

                You say Novell 3.11?

Which client software are you using, as there are some incompatiblity problems with certain client software.

I would recommend updating your Novell to at least 3.12 with all patches and using the latest Novell client, or using the Microflop client.

However, if you upgrade to Novell 4.11 (any version) and use NDS, do not use the Microflop client - use Novell Client 32 instead using a custom install and disable distributed print services.

This is what I have done and Alpha works just fine.

Here is some information that might be helpful. Without
specifics it is hard to help further than what has heretofore been recommended. What Network cards are you
                  using; what total protocols are loaded; what drivers 16 bit or 32 bit; protected or not; what version of Windows;
was it an upgrade or full load of Windows 98--matters because of defaults set; What bindings; Are there any
conflicts in network card irq's--network cards must have their own irq's and not share. I agee with Chris, upgrade upgrade and upgrade. Also, you will notice in the article that I have posted, many upgrades, patches and fixes for the network software, seach that database for more information.
