Default Countin of codes in a filed sans a filter

    To be more specific:
Say a logical Fielda contains the usual Y's and N's.
Without filtering or a query restricting the number of records,
how can I determine the number of records containing Y for example.

I realize that I can introduce another numeric field which has a 1
if Fielda has a Y and 0 othrwise, Then I simply sum that new field.

Alternatively, I can restructure Fielda as a numerical field where 1 is
used instesd of Y and 0 instead of N. From a data entry standpoiny, I
    don't like this latter approach

Is there any other straightforward to do this using Xbasic or otherwise?

    Any ideas are welcome.

See the "Tablecount" function, page 41 of the version 3 supplement to the PER.

Thanks Steve for youreply, based on the documentation,
tablecount will not work. Actually, I tried it and got nowhere.
