Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Update Server and Client

    Hey Guys,
I know this has probably been addressed here, and i've been searching for a concrete answer to this question. I had an update that was sent for one of my databases that had some reports, forms, and sets that were changed. I unzipped them in my main "server" PC for my upgrade to occur. Usually the other 7 or 8 "client" PCs running the runtime are updated as well over the network, but this time around I added the new files to my "server" PC, but the other workstations on my network don't see the upgrade. Am I just totally missing something here or did I just bypass an important chapter in my searching?

Any suggestions or any places that I could look so I can figure out how this works?

    RE: Update Server and Client

Are the workstations directly opening the database over the network, or are they opening shadow copies of the database created previously on each workstation by network optimization? If it's the latter what arrangements do you make to refresh the workstations? Did your changes include things that a refresh won't handle?

      RE: Update Server and Client

      Tom,
My understanding is that it is using shadow copies. All I did was make some minor modifications and then dropped them into the main "server" database directory. As far as I can tell, everything should be able to carry over since it has been done many times before. The guy who originally wrote the database had it to where if there were updates, he would e-mail a new build as a zip file, we would unzip the build into a master copy and a server copy, and then when the "client" PCs would start the Alpha runtimes, they would check for updates and update accordingly.

Would that be automatically done using the send files option in Alpha? (or is that an Alpha 6 V6 option only?).

I know next to nothing about this part of Alpha as I am still learning the actual designing and building portion. As we don't want to pay the original programmer a huge fee for some very minor changes, we are a little hesitant to contact him. I'll attach a copy of the build that we emailed to us.

      Thanks!

(This is opening a whole new thing for me to learn in Alpha and it is rather exciting!)

        RE: Update Server and Client

        Hi Steve,

Typically, from the master database, you would need to go to the main menu bar, select Tools, then Network Optimize. A new dialog box should appear. On the Options tab there should be a version number. Just increase the version number. Push the Set button. A little further down, you have 3 choices to update the shadow database. I usually choose the middle choice. Then close the dialog box.

Then when the other users start up the database, they will then have the chance to apply the updates.

To clarify and add to what Dan said....

It sounds like you updated some layouts and copied the appropriate files to the server so those changes were available BUT the version number also needs to be changed in order for the workstations to "find out about" the update and start a Refresh Optimize. The version number is stored in the .al* files so you have two choices: (1) change the version number on the server as noted by Dan or (2) change the version number on your development machine and also copy the .al* files as part of your update.

HOWEVER, be aware that all the global scripts/functions, security settings and other settings (see a5_save_settings) are stored in the .al* files so don't use that method unless you are sure that no security settings or other settings will be affected.

I believe it's also theoretically possible to put some kind of "trigger file" on the server and force it to update the optimize number using xbasic but that's beyond the scope of this question and it would take awhile to work out the details. It's certainly not worth the effort if you have access to the application on the server.
