Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

highlight a row when user enters in a browse

It seems that there is a way to have a row change colors or highlight if the user is in that row of a browse. That way it is clearer which line they are on when entering information. I can change properties, but can't see how to say "when user enters this line" change to a different color. I can do this in the "Tabs" feature on a tabbed form when placing in a form - is it possible in a browse?

    Hi Lynda,

The browse row background should become black or a dark color. It does for me. You can change the color by going to each column properties.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

      Hi Lynda,

I believe this is what you want.
My customers and I really like this touch. It makes both reading and data entry much easier.

I'm including a sample form for you to see.

RE: highlight a row when user enters in a browse

This is great!!! I only have one question - I don't have an embedded browse - it is just a browse that is the F8 companion to a form. I placed your formula on the "Oninit" and "onrowchange" and put the color formula in each column of the browse. It almost works, the problem I have is that only the current column changes colors, not the entire row which is what I need. Any ideas what I've done wrong?

        Thanks for the help.

One reason I sent the example was so you could study it.
There is no additional code. Everything that's there is needed.

Did you create the variable on the form?
Did you place the code in the form's onActivate event?
Did you place the code in the embedded browse onActivate event?
All of this is required to make it work.

I just reread your e-mail. This proceedure won't work on a straight browse. A straight browse does not have the event onActivate. I'm not saying it can not be done. The procedure I'm using is for an embedded browse in a form.

You could always make a form with nothing on it but the embedded browse.

            Just a thought
Have you set the colour/font equations for EVERY column?

Sorry Lynda, I see you have already answered that one.
Why not embed the browse on a form and call it from a button?

RE: highlight a row when user enters in a browse

thank you for your help! If it won't work on straight browse that limits my ability to put on a "Companion" browse - which is nice with the F8 toggle feature.

I'll give them a button to pull a list (which I can embed on a form). Is there a way to make it toggle back and forth like the F8 companion does. So if they call the list from a "button" and then scroll down 6 lines, how do I get them back to the "form" on the same record they have selected. Sort of like a homemade F8 feature....

                Any ideas?

RE: highlight a row when user enters in a browse

Actually, you can highlight the current record on a browse.

Here's the code for the onrowchange event for the browse:
                  var-"invrecn=table.current(1).recno()
                  sys_send_keys("{f5}")

Here's the code for the color equation for the browse column:
                  invrecn=table.current(1).recno()
you here give it a different color from the default color for the column

invrecn is a layout bumeric variable

                    Hi Lynda,

I've attached a zip file which includes a compnaion browse with Martin Coles' suggestion. Also, the form has a button which opens a dialog form.

There are probably better ways to do this. I'm offering two examples to get you started.

Let us know how you make out.
