Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    formatting time field

It seems no matter how easy someone says a program is I always manage to find something hard to do. How do I format a time field? I want it displayed as HH:MM. I dont care if it is a 24 hour military format or not.

    RE: formatting time field

There is no time field type in V5. Did you mean to be in the V6 area or are you trying to format a value like

    tm = now()
    ? tm
    = 08/08/2005 01:14:57 82 pm
    ? substr(format_data(tm,""),12,5)
    = "01:14"
    There can be only one.

      Or

      ? time("h:m AM",now())
      = "1:24 PM"
      There can be only one.

        RE: formatting time field

Where do I type the info. Is that a mask or where exactly do I type that indo. I have the field as a numeric. I can't seem to type in a mask. This Alpha is not exactly for the novice is it? I remember using the DOS version. That was so easy to setup. Why is the windows version so hard to use.

          RE: formatting time field

Tony your're gonna have to bear with me as I get confused easily.

First you said had a time field.
Now you say it is numeric.

Numeric fields contain nothing but digits so you can't have the colon in the field (HH:MM). If you were storing a time value as a number such as 1020 for 10:20 AM you would still have to convert to character to mask or format the data.

You can only mask a character value though the characters can all be digits.

Why not tell us your end goal so we can make some suggestions rather than trying to answer in generalities?

            RE: formatting time field

Okay sorry about that. I want to be able to enter a time such as 1230 and have it display 12:30 or enter 130 and display 1:30. Can AM OR PM be displayed? Let's say I enter 130pm and then it displays 1:30 PM.
After reading your above comments, it seems I have the wrong field type selected. Do I use Character instead on numeric? Thanks

              RE: formatting time field

The entry of values like 01:15 PM can be suggested. Change the field type to character 8 wide 0 decimals. Edit the field rules for the field, data entry tab, mask style, simple, mask to be 00:00 ll. Edit the transformations tab to CAse Convert, Upper. Edit the validations tab, custome validations, validation

              RIGHT(TIMEIN,2) = "AM" .OR. RIGHT(TIMEIN,2) = "PM"

              message

"Entry must be AM or PM"

You will have to do some other validations to ensure that the values involved make sense. The above will force the AM or PM and it will force the colon to be stored but it will not prevent the entry of data like 99:99 AM.

Sample attached. Full field rules only for timein field.

                RE: formatting time field

If you add another custom validation for the field

                (BETWEEN(LEFT(TIMEIN,2),"00","11").AND. SUBSTR(TIMEIN,4,2)""60").OR.(LEFT(TIMEIN,2)="12".AND.SUBSTR(TIMEIN,4,2)="00")

I believe it will only allow entries ranging from

00:00 to 12:00 AM OR PM

if that is what you want.

Thanks for all you help. I am running Alpha Five Ver 5 Home edition. I can not do the things you are telling me to do. I tried to run the Alpha five ver 6. It will not run on my computer. At this point I am not sure what I should do. Do I invest in the money and buy software that may not run on my computer or what. I was thinking about just buying the Alpha 4 DOS version. I am running Win98.

                    Tony:

My suggestion would be to consider upgrading your computer's operating system first. If that's not an option the go with the dos version.

                      RE: formatting time field

                      If formatting for time with

                      "(BETWEEN(LEFT(TIMEIN,2),"00","11").AND. SUBSTR(TIMEIN,4,2)<"60").OR.(LEFT(TIMEIN,2)="12".AND.SUBSTR(TIMEIN,4,2)="00")"

Is it possible to do calculations based on that format. Typically in reports, most people need to subtract the times to get the values. How could this be done?
                      Thanks In Advance,
                      Troy

                        Documentation says...

For information on performing time arithmetic, see the TOSECONDS() and TOTIME() functions.
