Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

DISPLAY THE DAY OF THE WEEK FROM A DATE FIELD

HI, DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO DISPLAY THE DAY OF THE WEEK WITH THE DATE, FROM A DATE FIELD.

EXAMPLE I HAVE A DATE FIELD WITH THE DEFAULT VALUE= DATE() AT RECORD ENTRY. I WOULD LIKE FOR IT TO SHOW THE DAY OF THE WEEK.

    NOT: 07/14/2005 BUT: THURSDAY JULY 14 2005

    IS THIS POSSIBLE?

    THANK YOU

Set the desired "format style" in your form or report layout using the format tab of the field object's properties.

    -- tom

p.s. ALL CAPS LETTERING is usually interpreted as SHOUTING and is harder for most of us to read.

      Debbie,

My earlier post was woefully inadequate. The format styles available on the format tab of the properties dialog do not include the day of the week.

You can create the desired format using an expression that incorporates several of the many date converstion functions:

Here's an example prepared using the interactive editor:

      dim tmp_date as D
      tmp_date = date()

      ?cdow(tmp_date)+" "+cmonth(tmp_date)+" "+day(tmp_date)+", "+year(tmp_date)
      = "Thursday July 14, 2005"

      -- tom

        Also:

        dim tmp_date as D
        tmp_date = date()

        ?date_format(tmp_date,"Weekday Month d, yyyy")
        = "Thursday July 14, 2005"

In addition, if you wanted to shout at your client with less readable output, you could even use:

        ?date_format(tmp_date,"WEEKDAY MONTH d, yyyy")
        = "THURSDAY JULY 14, 2005"

          Steve,

Neat! I'm going to have to get familiar with date_format().

            Tom,

It's very easy to get used to. When you get to the "Custom_Date_Format" parameter you can press Cntl-down to get a genie with all of the available date codes. Instead of having to learn all of those codes, you can easily construct your desired format. Thank you, Alpha!

                Hi Steve,

How can I apply this to my field called "att_date".

I want this field to show the current dat a record entry using that format.

                Thanks much :)

                    Debbie,

Yes, you can. In the field rules for att_date, just make it a calculated field and use the above expression.

As Tom has brought out in some other threads recently, you need to consider whether you really need this field as such in the first place. You could just make att_date a date field to hold the date that the record was last updated. Then when you need the desired format (e.g. "Friday July 15, 2005") for a given layout, it is easy to do so.

That latter approach also gives greater flexibility. Suppose you do not have much room on a layout on which to fit the long formatted string. You can then choose other shorter formats (e.g. "Jul 15, 2005") for the same date field. My 2 cents.

                    Steve
