    Default Uploading files

I have a large number of student records in .pdf format. I want to attach one file to each student record. I am new to Alpha Five and I do not seem to be able to find out whether I can do this or not.

Also, I would like to know if I can download a similar file from a student record.

    Thanks

You'll have to explain what "attach one file to each student record" means.

You cannot store a .pdf file in an Alpha table. You can have a field in a table which refers to the appropriate .pdf file and have, say, a button on a form which displays the .pdf file for the current record.

You could also code the onrowdoubleclick event for a browse to display the .pdf file for the record being clicked.

    Thanks for the above message.

Now the question is: how do I do it?

Can you refer me to where I can find how to do it?

    Thanks

Take a look at the xbasic "sys_open()" function and/or the action scripting "Open a non-Alpha file". (I'm working from memory on the action scripting command so the wording may differ somewhat.) Both are well documented in the webhelp on the Learning Center page.

I'll try to put an example together Monday if you're still having trouble. I'm away from an Alpha-enabled machine this weekend.

I will try and trace down these references.

Yes I would be most grateful for an example. I feel I have stumbled accross a difficult area in programming.

    Thanks.

Create a new directory on your drive. Extract the attachment to that directory. Open Alpha and navigate to the database you just created. Experiment with the form and the onpush events for two buttons and the onrowdblclick event for the browse.

It is a zip file as indicated of size 397,980 bytes, hardly nothing. If you have saved the file locally, right click on it and see if your windows version has some menu to expand or open the file and save the expanded files.

Thanks. I downloaded the file and it has all the files.

I am new to Alpha Five (to be correct Data-2-the-web-for MySql)files and I do not recognise these files. Where do I put them or how do I open them? This may sound stupid, but I am completely new to these types of files.I am pretty familiar with databases, but now I need to modernise and hence the big learning curve.

    Thanks.

I am not yet conversant with Data-2-the-web. Since you posted your situation in the Alpha Five Version 5 section of the message board, I assumed you were using Alpha Five Version 5.

If you were to post in the Data-2-the-Web section you might get a different set of answers.

    Sorry.
