Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Invoice Line Numbers

    Hello

I have a set which consists of 2 tables with the link being invoice number.

On the set form I need to show a browse on the child with records indicating the items sold.

I have two buttons - one that creates a new record reflecting a new item, and a second which I need to update any selected item.

Within the child I have a field called line number whcih is auto increments as I add new items to the browse

My new record button allows me to create new items with no problems, however, when I go into update any item I get the error message returned

    "No records in query"

and yet it lets me update the first item without any problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Alex,

If you're using the action script to "zoom to record" in order to edit a child table record, you probably need to release the query, before trying to edit the next one. I think the action script is leaving the query in place when you close the called form. The script you use to close the called form would be a good place to release the query (show all) the records.

Alex, if my supposition is right try displaying the child table records using the "default form" for the table after editing the first child record displayed in your embedded browse. You should find that a filter remains in effect. If you release it (show all), I'll wager you can then edit another child record. -- tom

        RE: Invoice Line Numbers

I work with Alex and have partly developed the app with him. We are not using the default form based on the set. The child table has an auto-incrementing line number field and the update button on the parent-child form opens another form based only on the child where the line number matches that in the selected record in the browse on the parent-child form.

This code works for the 1st record in the browse but not subsequent records.

There are no queries running on the form unless the user clicks on the find button.

I added a button on the parent-child form to show all and zoom to record with the same result - no records in query even though the child record is displayed in the browse.

Ok. Post a sample database here with instructions we can follow to see the problem. -- tom

Stripped out as much as possible.

To try this go to the forms tab and select form EST and try updating one of the items for the existing estimate. Try adding a new estimate and multiple items then see if you can update the 1st or other items on the new estimate using the update button.

I have used a very similar process in the update before for other apps without problem.

Are there things to avoid when creating tables and sets such as copy and paste operations etc? I tried adding some field rules to the set (esth parent and estb child) and although the rules gave the correct results in the definition box they gave errors when trying an append operation.

              John,

Your idea of instructions for me to follow, and my own idea, are quite different. Are you talking about the Zoom to Record button on the Work tab, or something else? While I'm sure it's meaningful to you, I have no idea what "try updating one of the items for the existing estimate" references.

                RE: Invoice Line Numbers

If I'm looking in the right place, try removing the permanent filter you embedded in the estb form. You have a filter expression there which limits display of records through that form to "lineno = 0"

                  RE: Invoice Line Numbers

Many apologies. I forgot I had left a zoom to record button on the form and in my hurry did not think of looking for a filter on the child form.

Why is it that occasionally a filter appears on a form which I have definitely not put there? At no stage have I typed in such a filter - especially as it would stop the form working as it should. Does filtering the parent cause this?

This kind of thing can happen easily when more than one person is working on an app. (I've been known to do it all by myself, too.) I've never known a case where it happened spontaneously. -- tom
