Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

New records into Child table browse

Maybe I'm missing something very simple. I realize that this sounds trivial as we have been doing this forever in ver1.

On a form for a set, we have data from the parent, named browse objects for the Children tables. We have a need to "enter" records into any one of the child table browses. Any attempt to "enter" a record brings us into parent table entry mode.

What is the secret? We set focus into the browse, hit (ctrl)E, or click on the "enter new record", and immediately go to the parent record entry.

    HELP!!!

    Tom

An interesting note. If I use the standard system menu, I can enter into the child record browses. When I use a custom menu, I cannot enter into the child record browses.

Tom, I wouldn't call it a secret but I use a button on the form to begin the new child table record. Often this calls a new form based on the child table alone. This gives me very good control over the data entry sequence. -- tom

I understand what you are getting at, but our users are VERY used to just clicking in the browse, and then entering the new data. We haven't had any problems with this, so it would be difficult to change their methods after 10 years.

          Tom,

I do what you are talking about using an embedded browse instead of a saved, named browse. Not sure that's the trick, but you might try it. I do not use standard menus in this case either. All the user does is click on the Enter new record line at the bottom of the browse.

If it makes any difference, I use MODAL data entry. I don't want the users to have more control over the information tan they need. If they are just looking around in the system, I really don't want them to have "change mode" always on.

On the form I was referring to, I do the same. It works.

VERY interesting.... I just took one of my NAMED browses and changed it to an imbedded browse, and all works as you stated. Although this produces the desired results, I still would prefer to use my own NAMED browses. In my opinion, this seems like a BUG. Hopefuly, someone from ALpha will look into this.

                  Thanks,

                  Tom

RE: New records into Child table browse

Some further research puts the last reply in question. I opened the screen up with the embedded browses and my custom menu, and could NOT get the browse to open. When I changedto the standard system menu, things once again, worked fine.

I need to have my custom menu so that I don't have a multitude of buttons on a form, and I need the custom browses so that I can use a named browse wherever I need to.

RE: New records into Child table browse

Tom, the one person I know of that uses named browses extensively is [email protected] in his medical apps.

I recall several people having difficulty with custom menus but am not sure of the results - do a search on it. I think it is a very different problem than the named browses.

I only use embedded browses, since they give me greater programming capability than names browses.

I have several embedded browses where users enter data, and there is a LOT of scripting going on in the background.

I use a combination of scripting in field rules and embedded browse events.

                      eg:
                      in the form "enteringpayments"
                      "customers" might be the parent
                      "payments" might be a child

entering payments into an embedded browse for payments:
                      field rules-canwritefield-event for "paymentamount":
                      if is_object("enteringpayments")
                      if val(a_field_value) " :enteringpayments:amountdue.value
                      ui_msg_box("","xxx")
                      cancel()
                      end
                      end if
                      end if

                      in the embedded browse's canrowchange:
scripting here is basically the equivalent of "canwriterecord"

heavy screening of embedded browses can get tricky and quirky, but with a little experimentation you can achieve the same thing you can on a separate form.

RE: New records into Child table browse

                        Martin,

Thanks for the reply. The named browses are nothing more than an easy way to use one browse in severl places. I think the issue here is the custom menus. If I use the standard system menu, I have no problems. However, I can't use the standard menu as it gives the user more than I want him to have.
I'm going to try to run with a custom toolbar and no menu and see if that will help.

                        Catch 22 anyone??

I just tested with a custom toolbar and NO menu. The entry into the browses worked fine. I will continue to experiment.
