FYI, I think this was the book referenced at the conference by Steve Workings. The listing was from Amazon.com. The used priced looked good.

Anyone else looking for this or any other used book can search through the following:

    http://www.bookfinder.com/

    http://www.abebooks.com/

    http://www.alibris.com/

These search the stock of used book dealers all over the world.

    Another source is Half.com.

I just purchased a brand new book with the CD sealed for $12.60 plus $3.25 shipping from Half.com. They have a few of these books available, along with used books as well.

    Hi,

For those of us who couldn't make the conference, what's the reason for hunting down a copy of this particular book ?

    Thanks - Ciaran

Apparently it is considered the developer's "bible".

Y because several people, including Steve Workings and Frances Peake swear by it; thats y. Although it is an "Access" book, it is a database developer's book even more so. It covers many fundamental database principals and provides sound criteria for estimating projects, etc. Highly recommended by the experts!

    Thanks.

I've been looking for a good database "theory" book. I found a used copy on amazon.co.uk for £5.99 (around $10) not bad value!

    Hi Richard,

Some time ago an alpha employee (can't remember who) recommended

    Michael J. Hernandez
    Database Design for Mere Mortals
    Addison-Wesley,1997
    ISBN# is 0-201-69471-9

The tone is somewhat informal for my taste (he gives pretend names to the people in his examples) but it is a pretty good book and it takes nothing for granted.

If you have to recommend something for beginners you could do a lot worse than this one.

He has another called SQL Queries for Mere Mortals. I have it but have yet to go through it with care so I can't comment on its merits.

For Alpha developers this book has little to offer in technival expertise. Its real value is learning Stan's methodology to building database applications.

The first 1/2 of the book outlines how to estimate, plan, design, build, test and deploy an application. This information crosses languages and products and is well worth the price alone. Stan has obviously been at this kind of work for a while. Stan is also the author of the Leszynski Naming Conventions, used by many developer.

The send half of the book is much more Access dedicated.

The book is over 5 years old, but we still use it here, when ever we forget how to go about putting a project together :)

    Hello all,

There is an second edition (March 2003) of Michael Hernandez's "Database Design for Mere Mortals". I just picked it up today, but it seems that there is something of merit for all levels of DB developers in this book.
Amazon.com has PDF sample pages of this book for review.

The MSDN site also has an article by SL regarding naming conventions that's informative: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/archive/en-us/dnaraccgen/html/msdn_20naming.asp

Half-Price Computer Books has a few copies (new) of Leszynski's Access book for sale on eBay under the title "Advanced MS Access 97 VBA Database Guide w/CD" starting at $10. Got one.

I just got the book and it is great!!!
I think this is all we need to start designing real and stable databases. It is great for beginners and advanced.

I bought this book at Barnes and Noble on the cheap giveaway stand as if it were a non-seller. It is far and away the best database application book I hav (and I have tons of them). Although it is geared towards Access the theory and ideas in the book are genius. It should be back in print without any updates needed.
