Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Preview/Print Filter Problem in 1 db

    XP pro
    Sp2
    Build 1506 1058

    Db compacted and computer re-booted

Only in one db I have a problem in Action Scripting when setting a filter for a report.

    1. Add New Action
    2. Select: Reports (etc)
    3. Select: Preview Layout
    4. Select: A Report
    5. Select: Records selected by a Filter Expression
Filter Expression, Order Expression and Sub-select options fields are displayed.
    6. Click on the filter expression button.
    7. The expression builder does not display and the system seems to hang as if it is trying to find it.

I get the same result if I select the option: Order criteria, no additional Filter criteria.

Tested the Action Script in Alpha Sports and other db's and it works ok!

What would stop the expression builder from being displayed in one particular db?

Can't send an example because I cannot repeat it elswere.

    Regards

    Alan

RE: Preview/Print Filter Problem in 1 db

    Hi Alan,
The first think that comes to my mind is an indexing problem. Are all your indexes working properly in that one table? Have you updated the indexes?

RE: Preview/Print Filter Problem in 1 db

      Wanda thanks for your reply.

Updated all indexes still the same problem. I will have to strip out the db bit by bit until I find a point where it works again and see if I can identify the problem.

      Regards

RE: Preview/Print Filter Problem in 1 db

This is my email to Sylwyn on this subject

          Morning Selwyn,

You were correct it was all about the global variables.

I retrieved a backup when the filter worked and then compared it to the next backup when it didn't work. In the one the did not work I added two new fields to a table i.e. Factor and Pct both logical and displayed as check boxes on a form.

On my startup form I have an entry button that would set the results of the check boxes into global variables Factor and Pct.

Leaving the global variables with those name would cause the filter not to work.

I changed their names to Factor_basis and Pct_basis and everything worked ok in both v5 and v6

          Q. Are Factor and Pct reserved Alpha names?

          Q. If the global variable is logical is an underscore required.

By the way I have moved all my apps into v6.

I will post this email on the forum and perhaps you could respond if there is anything significant about my findings.

Thanks for your guidance and best regards

          Alan
