Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    HTMLencode function in update operation

I'm having problems exporting memofields to a CSV-file which can be read by MS-SQL Server.

At first my imports from CSV worked, but now MS-SQL Server throws an error and says the CSV-file is not correctly delimited. I am assuming it's got something to do with the memofield value having a double-quote (") in it, and after the export there is somewhere a record like

    "id";"text"
12345;"And the man said: "This is going wrong"""CR""LF"

To have this problem properly taken care of, I would like to HTMLencode the textfield, as I need it like that anyway. The operation export genie seems not let me convert it while exporting, so I figured I do it after an export to a temporary table, with only the values I need in SQL later on. So I have a copy records operation (DBF -" DBF), on that table I want to run an update operation which converts the contents of the memofield to a HTMLencoded value. It will not let me. I tried to use the function also on a simple Character field, and it also says its a invalid or incomplete expression.

I am using the latest build of A5V5.

    Any ideas?

I read the documentation to say...

    Supported By

    Alpha Five Version 6

Maybe you could write your own function?
    There can be only one.

That is a possibility. But I read @ several other places besides the online documentation this function was already implemented in A5V5 in one of the later patches, even on this forum. Furthermore we bought V6, but we will not be moving to it before we solved some other issues with our current application, which make it impossible to use V6 for now.

HTMLencode() is not available in A5V5. The easiest method to determine if a function is active is to open the interactive window and start typing the name of the function. If it exists, autocomplete will popup. That is also a way to find functions that aren't listed in the help. In this case, the help says A5V6 only and testing show that is corect.

Thx for the answers. I will have to write my own function then.

Will try the interactive window next time, thx for tip! It's a bit confusing, most other code editors only use syntax coloring for known syntax and functions. A5 lacks a bit in this respect. Functions you write yourself can be autocompleted in A5 right away, but this makes clear that functions that do not exist also get colored green... The syntax coloring does not always work correctly either, but this is a minor issue.

I have to add one thing: The reason I used the messageboard in the first place is that I have 4 thick Xbasic Reference Volumes A5 Verion *5*, and on page 750 there is a small chapter 'Internet Functions': Second fx is HTMLENCODE().

The Reference volumes dates back to June 11th, 200*3*. Alphasoftware must have taken it out..... The why to it eludes me.

It was an error in the documentation.
