Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha 5 and Windows XP

I have tried unsuccessfully to bring up my database now that I have upgraded to Windows XP. I have read your message boards trying to help me and I have called your Tech Services. These people were not very happy to try and help me on the phone.

At present, I am transferring all of my database information into Microsoft Access because I can't get the answers I need.

If I get the info transfered, I am getting rid of Alpha 5. It worked great until I got Windows XP, but I am not a programmer and I cannot get anyone to come down to my level and help me. I am very unsatisfied.

    Please HELP!

We'd love to help, but we need a bit more detail. You need to describe what happens when you start A5, load your database, etc. But if you're already making the switch to Access and won't be using the info anyway, I'm confused about your appeal for help.

Thousands of us are running A5 on XP with no trouble, and you can too.

Did you upgrade an existing machine to Windows XP, or are you trying to move to a new machine with Windows XP?

You indicate that you are not a programmer. I'm not sure that Access is the direction you'd want to go unless your needs are fairly basic. Access is a powerful piece of software, but you reach a point where you need to program to access that power, and you reach that point much sooner than you do with Alpha Five.

RE: Alpha 5 and Windows XP

It seems that your dissatisfaction is more a logical result of your lack of knowledge in combination with a lack of effort to solve the problem by studying the problem and the options you have instead of an Alpha problem.

It also shows when you read your posting more detailed.
There is not much information in it to enable us forum users to help you, but there is a lot of complaining.

You might find your forum colleagues quite willing to help you if you take it seriously yourself. Posting a problem and asking persons to invest time and effort to help you whilst you are saying to be busy transferring to Access already can hardly be taken seriously.

Give us a chance here !

        Kind regards,

        Marcel

I was moving to a new machine with Windows XP. When I try to open A5V5, I get the error: PDF Driver failed to load with error: the printer driver is unknown. Html, Rtf, Test Driver successfully loaded. I select OK, Alpha comes up, but none of my files are listed.

Thank you for your prompt reply to my message.

I assure you, I am taking this problem quite seriously. While I do admit to a lack of knowledge about this problem, I find it quite condesending that you would reply in such a manner. That is the same attitude I received when I tried to call Tech Support, which supports my stand. I have spent numerous hours trying to resolve this problem by reading the message boards and trying various solutions. But you don't need to reply. I received a response from someone who is actually willing to help me and is courteous.

            Kindly regards,
            Cindy

              Cindy,
Did you load the latest update to Alpha5? I know for a fact that the updates modified or replaced several of the drivers for .pdf and .rtf files. Could you please let us know what version you are runing?

Open Alpha5 and click on Help, then "about Alpha 5"

you should get a message stating which Edition

              "FULL VERSION"

              Version:
              "1506"

              System Addins:
              "1058"

If those 2 numbers aren't there, you need to download the update and run it. After that, try your printing again.

                Cindy:
When you say you upgradted to Windows XP, I am assuming you upgraded from a previous version of Windows: what was it? Windows 98? Windows me?
I doubt very seriouselly that it has anything to do with XP or any other version, but you will learn that alpha is "finiky" when it comes to printers setup.
                I am guessing the following:
In your database you had setup default printers.
You installed Windows XP and anxiously wanted to get to alpha, but alpha can not figure heads from tails when it came to your printers setting because those printers have not even been set up on XP as of yet.
I do not know what printer(s) your are using and it seems that XP did not automatically detect your printers. It is also quite possible that you might have set a default fax that XP did not acknowledge either!
This seems like a case of putting the cart before the horse.
I will suggest that you do the followig:
On windows XP go to start, control panel, printers and find out if your printers and fax are installed or not.
                If not:
Go to the web site of each one of these items, download the drivers and install them.
Once your printers and fax are installed properly, try to run alpha and see what happens and we will take it from ther.
                Good Luck
                Gabe

I have Version 1410, Session 1036. When I go to help, the only update it will let me do is the auto update. It wouldn't let me put in today's date, so do I have to wait til tomorrow?

I have already checked and the printers are set. That isn't the problem, but thanks for your reply.

I installed my Update, but it doesn't help. Now when I open A5V5, all the print drivers have errors. Is there anything I have to do after I install the update?

RE: Alpha 5 and Windows XP

Let's go back to the beginning. The discussion has gotten sidetracked into issues of printer drivers and other things when the original message said "I have tried unsuccessfully to bring up my database."

That seems to say that you have not been able to open your database files in Alpha Five since you moved to a new computer with Windows XP. Is that correct?

Later in your original post you said you were transferring all of your database information into Microsoft Access and I'm pretty sure we all presumed you were using Access to open your existing .dbf files. Is that what you are doing, or are you simply retyping you information into Access?

                          Gabe
Where are you files located in the new machine? what is the Directory and the path?
Did you use Adobe files in your old machine?
Do you have any reports set to print to pdf files?
How did you transfer your Databse from the old machine to the new one?
What happens if you try, say, to create a new database in alpha? Can you access it?

                            Paul:
The reason I wanted to make sure her printers are installed properly is because she wrote:
"When I try to open A5V5, I get the error: PDF Driver failed to load with error: the printer driver is unknown."
which may or may not be an issue.
I doubt that is the issue anyway!
