Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Tabbed Subform & Browse

    Hello All

I have a form created at the set level. There are 7 tables in the set. On the form I have 7 tabs, one tab for each table. There is a subform for each table, the 1st tab being the Primary table (Customers).

On the 2nd tab I also have a browse object set to read only. This is a list of all the child records for a particular customer (Parts).

So, on the 2nd tab I have a summary of the Customer record (readonly), a subform so that I can enter/change/delete Parts records, and a browse which shows ALL the parts for the Customer.

All is fine except for one thing. When I go to edit a record (in the subform), and I modify 1 field and save, everything is OK. If I modify more than 1 field the record changes to another record. If I cancel the changes at this point and edit again everything works fine until I select another Customer.

If I remove the browse from the form everything works as it should.

An observation I have made is that when I click the field (first time) to edit, the egg-timer pops up for a second or 2.

Has anyone any thoughts as to what is happening and a workaround. Hopefully I've given enough info and explained the situation sufficiently.

This is an A5v4.5 app which I'm porting to A5V5 (1 of 10 I'm currently working on).

For security reasons I can't give you a sample of the DB.

There are 34k Customers & 170K Child Records.

    RE: Tabbed Subform & Browse

    Hi Chris,
This sounds like indexing problems, to me. I would review indexes at the set level and form design level to see if records are linking up properly.

Of course, update indexes and pack the db.

Other than that, I can't think of anything else. HOpe this helps.

      Chris

I won't debate the security issue with you, but I will suggest that you can build a small example that shows the problem and can be posted.

You'll get help much easier, quicker, and accurately if you do that.

        Hi Wanda

Yes, I'm sure it is an index problem somewhere. There are a couple of indexes that use fieldnames longer than 10 characters. However, in v4.5 this app works without problem no matter how many times I reindex or compact. Obviously v5 is different where indexing is concerned.

          Hi Chris,
The length of the index name shouldn't be an issue. If you have indexes (or any layouts or tables) with names that begin with a number, they could be the culprit.

You may want to also try the rtrim, or string functions on linking fields.

Also look again at your set design, and go into edit mode for each linked table. Review the Referential Integrity, the Include Record from Parent Table, the Child Table Filter, and the Child Table Order. You might find the reasons in any one of these options, in any one (or more of your links.

Now, I'm really curious as to your solution.

            RE: Tabbed Subform & Browse

I am having similar problems the one listed in this thread. I have a parent table (Company) that is one-to-many linked to a child table (Address), and Address is one-to-many linked to a second child table (Contacts). I have a form that has three browses on it (one for each table) that allows for easy selection of the records for each table. Also on this form I have all of the detail fields for editing the fields to each table.

The Company and Address Tables edit fine - even if there are multiple Address records for the same Company. Where I am having the problem is that if I have more than one Contact for a particular Address, it will allow me to edit the first Contact. But if I try to update the second Contact in the list, as soon as I start typing in any field associate with the Contact Table, it switches the record back to first Contact in the Browse list.

I have tried updating the indexes for all of the tables and set, and have compacted the database. The Referential Integrety (set to Cascade Changes), Include Record from Parent Table (set to Always), Filter (set to "blank") and Order (set to "blank") are the same for both child table links. Yet one works and the other doesn't.

Did anyone determine a solution for this, or does anyone have any ideas what is wrong?

            Thanks - Doug
