Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Auto populate multi select list box?

    Hello All Oct 27, 2004 1:50 pm

    Does anyone know how to populate a list box in xdialog with the contents of a specific field in a BROWSE as opposed to TABLE?

    Here is the code for populating a list box with a table if that is any help.

    auto_list_vCities = table.external_record_content_get("contacts","City","City",".t. .and. unique_key_value()")

    Thanks in Advance

    "with the contents of a specific field in a BROWSE as opposed to TABLE" - makes no sense to me. A browse is a way of viewing a table.

    Could you post more details?
    There can be only one.

      Yes Stan I do understand a browse is just a view?

      But wouldn't it be nice if you could do a progressive query.

      Whereby the possible selections to a query boil down with each previous selection.

      If you have 500 records in a table comprised of 4 cities. If I begin a query to select 1 city, my next query on the query would automatically eliminate all the area codes available from the table to just the area codes from the previous query as selection criteria.

      And so forth and so on.

      In other words allowing the user to not be able to pick an invalid selection based on a previous query.

      If I start with a multi select list box populated with cities and select 1 city do a query and see all the records for this city in a browse, I can see in the browse
      all the valid phone area codes for that city if there are more than one.

      But if I have to go back to the full table to populate a multi select list box of area codes, most of the area codes in the selection are not valid with the city I have just or previously picked.

      If a browse view behaved like a table then I could populate another list box with just the area codes in the browse. Which would eliminate a user from picking nonsense.

      This is the kind of thing I'm trying to figure out how to do, I suppose instead of creating a browse I could create a temporary table populated with data for my subsequest selection criteria.

      I'm up for Ideas on this ..

        You are using

        auto_list_vCities = table.external_record_content_get("contacts","City","City",".t. .and. unique_key_value()")

        to populate the list, allowing the user to make a choice. The choice is likely stored in some variable (say "myVcity").

        Your next list should be filtered something like.

        auto_list_vZipcodes = table.external_record_content_get("contacts","Zip","Zip","City = '"+var-"myVcity + "' .and. unique_key_value()")

        That's what the filter is for in the expression
        There can be only one.

          Thanks for that Stan

          If I where to add to the complexity of the progressive search and allow the user to start with any field and proceed to any field then I guess I'll need to store a lot of global variables and have a huge case statement to handle all the possible combinations of selections.

          I'll need to know if a user start with area code first then look up city or in the previous explanation start with city and then look up area codes.

          Could get very tricky with up to 15 searchable fields.
