Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    copy from a memo field

    Hi all,

I need to copy text from a memo field on a form to a different field selectively with a button.

The text may be 5 lines down and star 10 characters to the right from left side.

All the text I recieve is preformatted which makes it easier to know the location.

Which function would i be best to use?

    Thanks in advance
    Dave

RE: copy from a memo field

    Dave,
One of probably several ways this could be done.

You can do this by simply using the Action Scripting keystroke recorder for the most part, and a couple of other Action Script commands. In pseudocode...

    Using Action Scripting
Place focus into the memo field

    then, using keystroke recorder
arrow down and over to your starting point
(this must be consistent for this to work)

then, if the text to be copied is on one line...
use CTRL-END to select the text

or, if you want to select everything from that starting point to the end of the document...
use CTRL-PG DN to select all text from that point down

then execute CTRL-C to copy the text to the clipboard

then move focus to the field to be copied into
use keystroke CTRL-V to paste the text

    save the record

I still cant copy the text
I can paste it ctrl-end does not mark it and shift-c does, but will not in the xbasic code

RE: copy from a memo field

Well, it might help if I gave you the right Windows hotkey commands. Sorry.

SHIFT-END selects the text on one line

SHIFT-PGDN does all text from current location down

I just ran a quick test and it does work in A5's memo files.
(may need to throw a final SHIFT-END at the end to get all of the last line of text.)

Post your app here if you would like, or shoot it to me by email.

RE: copy from a memo field

It works fine in memo fields if you are doing it manually. I am coding it and it does not work when sending it by send key. It does not read the area needed.

3 downs + 5 rights + shift-end + ctrl-c should copy the text. it does not. I hve inserted a stop to see what happens and it stops while the text should be highlighted and it is not highlighted.

          Thanks

            Yep, right you are.
I had tested it manually but I see that the Windows select & copy commands do not work when called by xbasic using the sendkey approach. It's going to take a little experimenting I suppose.

            I'm sure there's a way... Good luck
