Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    administrator password

Okay -- I've apparently made an ugly mistake and have not found the solution.

I set up user groups and passwords without specifying an administrator password. My "Office" login is defined as having full rights and, up until now, I haven't even tried logging in as the administrator.

Now I need to change/add user groups and passwords and am unable to login as the administrator.

The ugly question is, "How do I find out what the administrator password is?"

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

      RE: administrator password

I set up user groups and passwords without specifying an administrator password.

If you are saying that you created A5 user groups and A5 passwords without specifying an A5 administrator password, sorry, but I don't believe that can be done. Alpha won't let you create users or groups until after the database password (administrator password) has been created. And, I think you may be in big trouble if you've forgotten the password. At least, I've never found a way to find a forgotten database password.

Is it possible that there is some confusion here between Windows users/groups/administrator and A5 users/groups/administrator?

Am using XP Pro -- originally set up on W98SE, but have transferred to this machine since the other was on its last leg.

I suppose that's possible, but I don't have any record of it (I've kept details of all passwords) and I've tried EVERY password I might possibly have used with no success.

No -- I set up the "Office" User with full rights, but when I try to view the Tools/Security, my only option is to change the Login Password -- all other options are grayed. And I'm logged into my machine as the administrator -- there are no other users set up.

Any other possibilities? I know there is a script available through alphabay that allows others (besides the administrator) to set up users and groups -- would that give me the access I need?

          RE: administrator password

The only way to setup users and groups is by first setting an administrator password.

If you have forgotten your password, you'll likely need to start over. You could create an entirely new database and add your tables/sets to it and copy all the objects to it. That will at least get you back to the pre-security state.

In the interest of time (mine, of course), what kind of confirmation do you need?
I can give you order number, license #'s, etc.
Then do you need a copy of the database to "reset"?

              RE: administrator password

Well -- this is the point where I beg your apologies.

After SEVERAL more attempts at logging into the Administrator, I have discovered the password.

WHATEVER possessed me at the moment of decision to make the selection I used is beyond me. I can only confess newbie ignorance or claim some altered state of consciousness. Maybe I did it in the middle of a medicated migraine. I don't know.

But I'm in and able to access what I need.
              THANKS for your patience!!!
