Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Several Problems Please help

    Hello!

First of all, I hope that I am posting in the correct area. I am still relatively new to alpha 5. I was quite proficient with alpha 4 several years ago. I have excellent computer skills and have spent years training people to use the computer. However, I am not a programmer and although I plan to learn X Basic in the coming months, I am currently using only action scripting.

    Here are my issues:

    1. When I open a form, any form, the first time, I have either a field label or the font on a button that is about twice the size of the rest. The fonts are all designed to be the same size. Why does this happpen, will this happen after I save the application and install it in the runtime?

    2. I cannot use qlinker, I get the error that says the "multiple ole db... no work was done". I have looked in the postings but could not find an answer. I found a solution on the microsoft website but I do not know which A5 file to apply it to.

    3. After I have been working on a form for a while, parts of it start to disappear, I have to exit a5 and sometimes even reboot my computer to get it back. Please help!!

    4. There are two patches on the downloads page, one for a5home and one for a5 full. I have both versions. Can I install both patches into their respective programs??

Thank you for any help that you can give me!! I hope to learn enough to someday be able to return the favor!!

    RE: Several Problems Please help

1 & 3 may be related to your video display adapter, especially if you're running Windows 98. Disable or dial down any hardware acceleration you have specified for your video display adapter. Verify that you have the latest video drivers from your card's manufacturer. In any case it's helpful to remember that Alpha Five is a large memory hungry application. Multi-tasking with other large applications can lead to display irregularities especially with Win98.

    4 is easy. Yes.

Thanks for such a quick reply. I am running windows XP and I also try to run only A5 when I am working on it. I have a bunch of processes running but they are all antivirus and firewall. I have a fairly large memory.

      Does this change your response?

      Thanks!!

For XP I'd contact my video card manufacturer and install the latest drivers. -- tom

          RE: Several Problems Please help

          Hello Again!!

I turned of my hardware accelerator which completely turned off my display adapter. I have many programs which I need the adapter for. Three things:

          1. Turning off the adapter did not solve my problem with the font size.

          2. Could this be because I am using a notebook?

          3. If this happens on my client's computer, if I can fix it by turning off his hardware accelerator, can I work this into a script? He will need to turn it on and off and this is the first computer his company has had, they can barely turn it on.

          Thank you!!!

          M
