Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Tablet PC's

I note there are some threads concerning running A5 on tablet PC's earlier this year. I am wondering if anybody has experience of using a tablet for handwritten data entry into A5 ?

It can be a pain. You have to place the curser in the A5 field (tap), then use the Windows writing pad to enter the data in the field, tap the next field, back to the writing pad...
The recognition by Windows (SP1) is fairly accurate and SP2 is supposed to be improved. It's a lot of hand movement to use the tablet. Input is much faster if you have a keyboard.

      Thanks Rupert
I have persuaded Acer to loan me one for evaluation.

          RE: Tablet PC's

Hi Andy, just returning the demo unit to Acer along with an order for a unit for long term field evaluation which must tell you that I got along pretty well with the machine. I first looked at tablet type PC's back in 2000 and bought a machine from Fujitsu, it cost about 2500 ($4250) and was pretty poor all round. It was small, heavy and the handwriting recognition was distinctly patchy. It had no keyboard although you could plug a keyaboard and mouse into it.
The Acer is very far removed from that machine of 4 years ago. For a start it was much lighter and conisderably faster and had the kind of screen that swivels and clips over the keyboard to provide a "tablet" style PC, with the screen in its normal mode it was a very acceptable and compact notebook albeit the CD/DVD drive was a usb plug in external unit.
With regard to using the machine with Alpha and with regards to Ruperts comments above about the fiddly nature of handwritten input I would comment as follows.
There is a function that allows you to enter data directly into the field objects provided you have designed your forms with that in mind. One thing to be aware of, certainly as far as the Acer was concerned, is that in "tablet" mode the screen orientation changes to portrait so your forms should reflect that and the data entry fields kept as close to the centre of the form as possible. Certainly for applications where not much data entry is required out in the field the machine was first class and will be going on trial with one of my clients shortly.
It would be great if Alpha five had a field type that would allow direct input and also accepted "drag and drop" items such as the "post it" type notes that come with Tablet XP.
I should also point out that XP Tablet comes with a wonderful application called Journal which is like a blank sheet(s) of ruled paper onto which you can write, type, insert and annotate images, highlight with yellow/green/pink and all the stuff you would do on paper.
