Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    browse refresh

    I have an order form with an embedded browse (browse1) for backorders. When a backorder is required, I copy the current record to a temp file, update it, then copy to the backorder file. When copied to the backorder file, the browse (browse1) on the form should update to include the new backorder. The browse sometimes updates but often does not. If I exit the form and restart the browse updates properly on the form.

    To diagnose, I have added a button which "on Push" performs the following:
    parentform:browse1.activate()
    parentform:browse1.resynch()
    parentform:browse1.refresh()
    When this button is selected, the browse does not refresh to show the added backorder.

    I have added a second button which "on Push" performs the following:
    topparent.QuickSortExplicit("Browse1:suffix","Ascending")

    Neither button seems to help refresh the browse.

    Any suggestions?

    RE: browse refresh

    Strait away: I do not have a solution for you.

    I know however, that refreshing embedded browses can be a complete drama. I am struggling with that subject myself in several cases, where I can not get the browse to refresh no matter what command I connect to a button.

    It seems to be an unsolved problem in A5, I have been getting some advice on this in the past, but it did not work.

    Let's see if someone else can help here.

    Kind regards,

    Marcel

      Looking for help, support? Need this to work. If it is a problem does alpha support just ignore it?

          Maybe it's just me, but I would think if your "browse challenge" post actually had a file attached to it, you would have a better chance of getting an answer.

            RE: browse refresh

            Have you tried.....

            The "OBJECT".REPAINT() method re-displays a control, browse, or form. In some very rare situations, an Alpha Five form may not repaint properly after you perform some action. You can now force objects on the form to repaint. For example, if a browse did not repaint properly after you navigated to a new record, the topparent:browse1.repaint() method would repaint the browse object called "browse1".
            There can be only one.

              RE: browse refresh

              Thanks for the suggestion. I posted a file to "browse challenge" duplicating the problem. I tried adding an inline basic line to the button "Update backup" containing "topparent:browse2.repaint()". It did not make any difference. (Made the change to my copy, not the copy posted.)
              Any other ideas?

              Posted to "browse challenge" because this thread didn't solicit any more help.

                RE: browse refresh

                Tyr this:

                parentform:browse1.activate()
                parentform:browse1.resynch()
                sys_send_keys("{F5}")

                  Unfortunately we will have to wait until v.7 for a real fix!

                    RE: browse refresh

                    Thanks for the suggestion. Tried it real quick with no success. I can't understand how this has not been addressed adequately as of yet, it does not seem to be such an obscure operation. Need to digest and test suggestions posted by Tom Cone, Jr. on the "browse challenge" thread. There I posted a very simple sample. I am very disappointed with Alpha's shortcomings in this area.

                      If you want real fun, try more then one embedded browse on the same form and try to refresh that !

                      Regards,
