Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How do you handle memos?

I am changing all my memos so that they are read only.
To edit one I have a button that opens a separate form allowing the memo to be edited. I like this effect and it works well but I want all the edit forms to be dialog forms.

I open the edit memo form over the form that calls it (and find the record with an index find) When I close the form I can do a refresh on the on activate for the "parent" form so that the edits show.

I want to make all the edit forms dialog to force the user to close the form to go back to the parent form. The problem arises in that a dialog form apparently doesn't deactivate the parent form so I can't refresh on the on activate going back to it. When the edit form is not dialog the edit form becomes active so this isn't an issue.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make the parent form lose focus when the edit form is opened without closing the parent form so I can use the on activate (or something else) to refresh it?

I don't want to close the parent when I open the edit form since I want to use these edit forms from several places and I want to avoid separate coding for the return form in each case.

    Thanks in advance.

RE: How do you handle memos?

    Hi Russ,

I've had excellent results using this code with memo fields.
This script is attached to a button on the form and the memo field is read only.

The nice thing about this script, the memo field is only open long enough to save the change or the enter.

This memo is in a grandchild table.

RE: How do you handle memos?

      Thanks Ron,
I think this is sort of what I was doing before I went to the dialog form.
So far the options that work correctly are closing the parent form, opening the edit memo form and reversing this to go back to the parent. This refreshes the parent but loses portability since I have to code to open the parent when I close the edit form.

Or I can make the edit memo form NOT dialog. When I go to the edit memo form from the parent, the parent loses focus and can be refreshed using the onactivate event.

When the edit memo form is a dialog, the onactivate event no longer works when I go back to the parent. The title bar is grayed as if it is deactivated but it doesn't respond like it is deactivated.

      Thanks,
      Russ

Solved the problem. Got rid of opening them as dialog and saved the record on the deactivate event. This prevents the user from keeping a memo in edit mode and activating another form.

          Russ,

I glad, but I just spent a bunch of time making you a demo.
At least take a look at it.

That's nice Ron, This has some advantages over what I was doing. I will look at it more closely tonight.

              Thanks again,
