Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to Recalculate

I have several calculated fields in the parent table of a set on which a form is based. I want to have a button on the form that recalculates those fields. But I can't see a way to do it using Action Scripting. If I leave the form and open the browse, I can cause the fields to recalculate by making a change in the browse records. I don't want my users to use that approach. Any suggestions?

    Hey Wallace,

Been a while since we shared a ride to the user group meeting.

Just add an action script, xbasic, inline xbasic with the code

    a5_recalc_calc_fields("yourtablenamehere")
    There can be only one.

      RE: How to Recalculate

No offense to anyone but, since I seldom use action scripting any more, I always get a kick out if it when people suggest to "add an action script with in-line xbasic." As if putting xbasic within an action script is somehow easier than "real" xbasic. Actually, the xbasic in an in-line script is exactly the same as 'real' xbasic so why not just say "add this xbasic script" when the only thing in the action script will be the in-line xbasic?

It always sounds to me like somebody who isn't comfortable with driving so they ask somebody else to start their car - then they get in and drive it anyway.

Maybe there is a reason but I've become so comfortable with xbasic that I find action scripting to be very confusing and difficult to troubleshoot. So, my opinion is certainly biased.

Again, please don't take offense by this. It's just an observation.

Cal, you sound like the bicyclist who's forgotten the early comfort from training wheels, and who occasionally tries to ride a bike that still has them. -- tom

You're right. And, that's a much better analogy than mine was!

And, by the way, I also noticed that Stan didn't specifically say "action script" but also allowed for "xbasic".

Thanks Stan, Tom and Cal. Its fun to see you "seniors" tickle each other's cages.
I thought I might have to use XBasic. I just did not know what command to use. I AM comfortable using whatever XBasic I need in Action Scripting. Having taken the lazy man's way to getting code into my applications, I always start with Action Scripting. I have been able to do nearly everything I wanted to do, until I run up against something like this.

              RE: How to Recalculate

              Hey Stan,

I just created a script using this recalculate statement.

The next step in my script will be to run an export operation. I want to be sure all the data is updated before it exports, but since A5 recalculates completely in the background, I'm not sure when it is finished.

Is it okay to add another step to the script immediately after this one, or do I need to add some sort of pause for A5 to finish updating before telling it to run the export operation?

              Thanks!

To give yourself a slight comfort level, you may want ot do a form.refresh() where a couple of the calculated fields would show a change. Then, if it all looks OK, go ahead with the export.
