Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Expected Value Error

I create a database and in that database I create fields for a table. (Example-Membership Information) After these fields are created, I try to open this table and I just keep getting an error message....Expected value. I don't know what this means and I cannot find a solution to this error message anywhere.

Can anyone please tell me what I need to do to correct this?

    Thanks, Videlle

    RE: Expected Value Error

Check your field names, database name, table name.

    From the documentation..........

Alpha Five recommends that table and field names start with a letter (A-Z or a-z) and be composed of letters, numbers (0-9), and underscore (_) characters.
    There can be only one.

      RE: Expected Value Error

Stan: Thanks for such a quick response. I have set up other databases with tables and have not had this problem. I simply create a new database and we'll say I name it..Reno Gamblers. Then while the database is open, I create a new table. I have entered field names without starting with the letters A or Z before and it has worked fine. However, this time I created my fields with the following....
      ID Number....Name.....Address...City...Zip...Phone Number...Birthday

When I close it asks me if I want to save it. I click OK. Then I give this table a name. We'll say....Member Info

However, when I now want to open it and start making my entries, I just keep getting the Error....Expected Value.

        RE: Expected Value Error

It's interesting that your table name and 2 of the field names do not follow the recommended naming convention. (They include blank spaces.) Might there have been other discrepancies that you now can't see?

Is it possible that you began seeing this error after trying to define some field rules? I ask because this kind of error is most often seen in cases where Alpha is trying to parse a faulty expression. For example, the failure to delimit a text string with quote marks.

          RE: Expected Value Error

also check to see if you have any field rules - if you made some, they may be firing and are problematic - if so, remove them 1 by 1 until you find the problematic field rule

if not, edit the structure, and delete 1 field at a time until you find the problematic field

Tom, just for the record, I've never had a problem with field names with spaces - although I definitely agree that it is good practice to not use spaces.

Martin, I wouldn't argue with you. However at this point in my life I prefer not to have to fill my limited memory with lists of things that work with blank spaces and lists of things that don't. Far easier to never use them.

              RE: Expected Value Error

Tom: I could not figure out what was going on. I tried all the suggestions and nothing worked. I finally set up all my field names and data that consisted of 82 enties in Excel. Then I went back to Alpha 5.5 and set up a new database and simply imported the excel file into a new table. And now I can open the new table just fine and continue to add entries.

Thanks to all that responed to my problem. I'm sure that there has got to be something going on in my entries but it is not due to using spaces. I have used spaces in all the database tables that I have prevously set up with no problem.

              Many thanks again to all,

Hopefully someone will see this since this thread is a year old.

I am having the same problem but with none of the causes listed above. Also, I get the error if I double-click the Forms Icon, but not if I right-click and open from the menu.

                    RE: Expected Value Error

                    Ok here it is.
                    It is pretty simple
2 tables: one for mileage expense; one for other expenses one or two simple calculated fields for each.
When I double click the forms I get the expected value error, but if I right click or highlight and open from the button it doesn't happen. I am unable to open the tables directly. The databse does everything else like it should.
                    Thanks

Just checked out your App. It works fine in all departments on my v5 full version.
You are using the Home version, I don't know what the originator of this thread was/is using.
Do you have the latest patch installed ? Check Help/ About , latest (and final) build is 1506/1058.

Here are the setps I use.
                        Open A5
                        Open Database
On table tab double click Business icon

I an not open the table any way I try, I can open the forms and run reports.
                        I am puzzled.

I get the same results as Colin. Everything works just fine, although I am not using A5 Home. I don't see any issues at all and you are using the lastest version of home. Try zipping the database, deleting the existing database and tables, and then restoring the database. Since that is essentially what we have been doing, perhaps it will have an effect.
