Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    I cannot share the database

I rebuilt it, made it very straight forward and it is working great so far. Now my trouble is that I need to let other access it to test, but when I open it on another computer, I get an error message that the Customer files cannot be opened. After I close that one, the database opens, but all the tables are greyed out and there are no forms.

What did I do now? The last one opened and I did the same things...

    Thanks again-

RE: I cannot share the database

    Hi Lori

Can you access other files in the shared folder over your network - try creating a Wordpad file and save to the shared folder - It may be shared as "read only".

Is there a firewall setup on either system.
Some versions of Norton Internet Securty make it difficult to access shared drives & folders - disable NIS and try.

You have separate copies of A5 or Runtime on each system.

    Best of luck

No, all other files share fine. I can even share the backedup ZIP files. This is just the database. And now when I open it on my computer, the customer form opens just like I want. BUT in the control pannel, all the tables are in grey and there is nothing in the layouts tab. Yet I can see my data if I enter it in the default opening form...

RE: I cannot share the database

Have you tried restoring your latest backup to a separate folder and see how it runs - it should work fine if you have not coded any specific paths - I think that your problem may be a damaged .ddd file.

Apparently the backup is messed up as well. I did restore and it is happily in grey as well.

So let me guess... again... I need to start over...?

I did check that, and they are all in the same place. I made sure it was not looking for any old files in an older version of the DB. They all have the exact path name except for what the file is, say customer, finance, projects...

                Lori,

Are the tables in the same folder as the database dictionaries?

How are you trying to 'open it on another computer'? Tell us exactly, step by step.

RE: I cannot share the database

OK, I created a database. I did the tables and the sets. I recreated forms and browses. I saved everything into a new folder on my CPU. When I was done, I moved the entire folder over to my shared documents. I then went to another computer to open the new database for testing data entry and that is when I am getting the errors and everything is grey.

Now, on MY CPU, I open what I think is the database, and it is all grey.

I zipped the folder. Maybe you will see what I am seeing. I hope!

You'r right there all grayed out - it's difficult to be of any help immediately until I examine further.

Small cumfort - but I have suffered as you and now make staged backups.

                        Hope you get a solution.

I haven't checked your attachment but this will happen every time you split parts of your database among separate folders. Portability requires that you keep everything in a single folder. i.e. the tables (the dbf files) must be physically present in the same folder as the database dictionary files (the adb file).

Why you open the database the database folder becomes 'current'. Alpha Five will look for your tables in the database folder by default. If they're not there, it will look for them using the physical path to their original location. You get the greyed icons for the tables when the database knows that certain tables belong in the database, but alpha can't find them either in the current folder or in the physical path that existed when they were first added to the database.

I looked at the detail view from the control panel and the tables/set show in your directory instead of mine.

I then dropped all of the tables/sets and add them back to the database and it works much better. I suggest that you do that.

But why should that happen if I saved them into the same folder? And now, how do I find out where it thinks they are all located it the path names are the same and are pointing to the folder I am in?
